Looking for a traffic source.

So i have read a lot of stuff so far, i feel like i'm getting towards the very beginning of understanding whats going on here, but my question seems to be so simple that i cant find it covered.

I want to specialize in one traffic source, and i'm trying to make sort of informed decision on what to start researching, i just cant seem to find any comparison or even a guide of whats better used for what, and i'm pretty sure its because these things are so basic that folk think its just second nature.

My question if i could stop rambling for half a minuet would be this:

What would you base your traffic source specialization on when first starting out and why?

This is my first post bar my "Hi i'm new here" post so if i'm being daft please just refer me elsewhere.

Thanks!

Tom

Hey Tom! Although basic, your question is a good one to ask, and may not be as simple to answer as many may think.

There are many types of traffic. If you look under the "Traffic Sources" section of our forums, you'll see many subsections each talking about a specific traffic type: mobile display, ppv, adult, search, facebok etc.

As you've implied in your post, not every type of offer will "work" for every traffic type. Match up the right traffic type/source with the right offer and you're halfway to profits - get this part wrong and no amount of optimization will make a camp green. So how do you figure out which types of offer will work on which types of traffic? I can think of several ways:

1)Do a lot of spying, either using subscription services such as whatrunswhere, or manually go to publisher sites/apps of individual traffic sources, to see what kinds of offers are being promoted. If lots of people are promoting a type of offer using a type of traffic, it means that at least some of them are making profits.

2)Read follow-alongs and success stories here on STM to get an idea on what kinds of offers people are having success with, and where they're advertising.

3)Ask experienced people such as fellow stackers, or account managers from affiliate networks / traffic networks. i.e. Ask affiliate managers "what are your hottest verticals and what are some traffic types/sources that work best for those?" and traffic network reps "what kinds of offers are doing well with your traffic?"

Hope that helps! If you have more specific questions let us know.

That's for your great response, I'm trying to network this morning and get to know some people who have been in the game a while.

As for spying I'll get right on researching. I've been reading sucess stories most of last night and all I can say is it makes me want it more.

Cheers again.
