Building 'Like Gates' on Facebook (8)

Building 'Like Gates' on Facebook

Hi Chaps,

I'm thinking about building a 'Like Gate' on one of my Facebook pages to trial some viral growth mechanics. Does anyone have experience with the do's and don'ts?

The gate would revolve around a limited time promotion which is advertised in advance. Users will be invited to pre-register their email addresses and must like and/or share my page on the day in order to gain access to the promotion. Because of the content used during, I think we will see exponential growth of the page. However, it's going to be controversial. Think scantily clad ladies interacting with my product. Nothing NSFW though.

Am I asking for trouble doing this? Could I get slapped with a ban or similar?

Thanks in advance!

Jonathan

Like gating isnt allowed on facebook, so yes you will get banned if facebook detects it.

Yep always check if this kind of thing is against FB ToS. It is. Know the ToS like the back of your hand as it really is not worth sacrificing an account in the early stages of your FB endeavors.

To the best of my knowledge, FB flat out does not want people being asked/incentivised to like a page or share content to their timeline to gain anything.

See:
https://developers.facebook.com/policy/#properuse
https://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php

With apps, you can incentivise some actions - particularly connecting with an using an app to gain access to something. Filling out a survey and submitting it for example, or capturing an email, is also fine, as long as you don't gate via likes or timeline posts.

At the end of the day, if you think about what Facebook wants, this all makes complete sense. They want users to like pages where they actually want to see their content or genuinely like the page. They want users to only share content they want to share, not anything they are forced to share to get something - period.

There are however a lot of ways you can do this within FB ToS and not risk your page:

Use FB offers

Run a sweepstakes - you can ask people to like a post as an entry format (but not share it to their timeline).

Use an action-gated form of entry and politely ask people to like your page or share with friends

I believe you can reward people with extra entries with sharing, though you'll likely need a 3rd party app for this. As long as it's not the initial entry - but please do check up on that as I am not sure if they changed it. Third parties with sweepstakes apps (e.g. ShortStack, AgoraPulse, etc.) will know better.

Thanks for this guys. Had almost forgotten about this post! Will make sure to check the ToS moving forward. At any rate, I have been running giveaways which ask users to like and share a post for entry chances. No problems so far.

If you do this you'll get blocked within a day by FB because you are basically spamming, but this technique works like hell and can make you +1,000$ per hour.

We had/have a few affiliates in our network doing this, and the results are amazing, but its very short term so you better make as much money as you can in 24 hours and have your next plan ready :-)

Hit me up on skype if you want to talk this thru in more detail.

You're going to think this is funny but I wasn't even considering like/share posts for aff commission. It's merely a tactic to grow my page. Perhaps that's why FB has been lenient. Or maybe I've just not hit their radar yet!?

FB is not lenient, they just respond more quickly when their are user reports.

FB doesnt care whether you make money or not, if you do anything that is even remotely against their policy and T&Cs, they'll delete your page and block your account(s).

Just ask the Coolhunter: http://thenextweb.com/facebook/2012/...-infringement/

Poor guy lost 10k unique clicks a day!
