The Mobile Million Dollar Question.. (13)

The Mobile Million Dollar Question..

The big question... How do you make a million dollars in the mobile ad space?

Unfortunately, I have to reference previous experience coming from the FB world which may or may not be related. When marketing in FB you spend your time tweaking ads, demos, landers and offers to find what works. Once you find a winning combination you simply adjust your bid, turn up budgets and bank. Now here in the mobile world.. I tweaked my lander, optimized my offer, and have my ads/targeting set. I adjusted my bid and turn up budgets. $7.56 later I have banked a whopping $56! Mind blowing I know.. This must come down to lack of impressions for my targeting unless there is something else Im missing and in that case Id love to hear it.

Problem: Maxing out impressions per my targeting criteria
Solution: Get more traffic sources and duplicate campaign

Traffic Source 1: Spend ~$8 to Rev ~$55
Traffic Source 2: Spend ~$20 to Rev ~$70
Traffic Source 3: Spend ~$100 to Rev ~$140
Traffic Source 4: Spend ~$26 to Rev ~$70
Traffic Source 5(Stopped): Spend ~$8 to Rev ~$12
Traffic Source 6(Stopped): Spend ~$600 to Rev ~$100

So those are the numbers Im looking at and to be clear this is one offer and one top tier geo(not US). Now Im curious to hear from those at $x,xxx+ daily how many traffic sources are you realistically managing? Should I be balancing 30+ traffic sources at once to get to some realistic figures or is there another better approach? I have no problem assembling a team to manage 100+ traffic sources if thats what I need to do but if I am going at it wrong then id like to know before putting time and effort into that.

As always I appreciate ANY feedback. Anything helps. Thanks!!

Jack

What types of offers are you trying to push on FB mobile?

Sorry if i confused my post by including FB. I have moved away from FB and pursuing mobile traffic sources.

So i guess the answer is.. "test it your damn self" lol! Thanks guys! Im on it! Signed up to maybe 15 traffic sources. In case it helps anyone and coming from a mobile newbie.. It appears that certain traffic sources have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to the types of offers and geos it converts on. So just because you try a traffic source and it doesn't work that could mean that maybe its not the right place for your offer. What Im doing is making a spreadsheet and listing the networks Im apart of and what I experience "Good with this.. Bad with that".. so in the future if there is a new sweeps offer that is kicking ass I go straight to my list and start with the traffic sources that worked well for me on sweeps and so on.

May seem elementary but just an observation I made and thought I would share. Ill let you know how many traffic sources it takes to get to $x,xxx.

There's a lot of ways to be honest. You'll always have to test yourself but there's a couple things to focus on for hitting larger campaigns.

Note: You'll need a higher testing budget, and the bigger the campaigns, usually the more competition.

TRAFFIC
- Focus on larger traffic sources (admob, airpush, inmobi, adcash, reporo, plugrush is pretty large too, etc.. but there's a LOT more you just need to find some yourself.)

NICHES
- App installs + subscription offers that apply to everyone (aka whatsapp, securtiy issues, general content downloads etc..) (you need to be targeting the masses)

The take home is test big traffic sources with offers that do well that apply to the mass majority of people. That is how you make millions/yr with mobile.

The hard part is testing the 30 top offers with 15 traffic sources with a bunch of different angles and landing pages

Thank you very much for the response. Two things stand out for being very relevant for me right now. One is traffic source, I need to identify what traffic sources actually have volume with my geos and convert (hence the spreadsheet above). Im using the posts in the forum to find traffic sources that are recommended but as mentioned I will need to find more on my own. The second thing though is figuring out the most cost effective way to test offers.. Im definitely learning that now but when switching traffic sources it can change the strategy a bit. Im learning tho!

I started with 10 different traffic sources. 90% of my profit comes from two of them and I do mid to high four figures a day depending on the day. You really have to get to know the traffic source. I get friendly with my reps on Skype and after having spent a few thousand with them I start asking to see if I can take over my profitable traffic sources by pre-paying them for 30 days (costs a lot so you'll need budget. I just spent $xx,xxx to secure 10 days worth of traffic on just one source for a time sensitive app instal). You'll be amazed at what your reps can do for you. I'm on a fairly large network that I know a lot of my colleagues have given up on because there is too much competition. I spoke to my rep and received exclusive buys on some of their partner sites. This was after 3 months of massaging the relationship. Get to know the network and how it works and what they can do for you. It sometimes takes time but it can be well worth the effort.

So on each particular traffic source you also have to test and make a whitelist of partner sites with good volume?

Yes, most ad networks give you the ability to track their pub or zone ids that will show you where your profitable conversions/instals are coming from.

I use Voluum for tracking, I haven't had any issues with them for mobile although I know some web based guys have had trouble when IPs get blocked. I'm at their top level which is $999/month.
