What does the banner optimization process look like? How do you do it?

Lets say Im going to start with 10 banners and let them run until I have something like 100 clicks each.

Ok, great! I found my top two performing banners and I let them run for a day and make a small 1% profit.

now I want to take it to the next level. I want to get my banner CTR up... well what does that process look like?

My two top banners have red text and a beefy looking dude (cause Im pushing muscle)

Do I just make new variations of those two banners?

If I wanted to test
different headlines
different bullet points
different call to action
multiple images
different color text
different style

I would end up with 100 banners!!

So what is the process like for you? It is going to be different for every vertical, every niche of course.

Everyone does it differently - here's how I would do it:

-For the angle(s) those 2 banners were made from, brainstorm additional headlines to test.
-Take the 2 headlines and match them up with different images.
-Take the image(s) from those 2 banners and match them up with different headlines (ones that are showing promise thus far, and also new headlines written using the same angle).

Once I've nailed down headline + image combinations that work, I would then use a couple of the best banners to test multiple calls-to-action, etc.

I would end up with 100 banners!!
I wouldn't make all possible combinations at once! Otherwise, even if you were just testing 10 headlines and 10 images you'd end up with 100 banners like you said. Assuming you're testing a specific angle, an image that performs well with say 2-3+ headlines will likely perform well when paired with other good headlines from the same angle - same goes for headlines (i.e. a headline that performs well with a few images will likely perform well with other good images from the same angle). After a while, you'll have some headlines and images that are consistent winners, so that you can use your proven best images to test all new headlines, and your proven best headlines to test all new images, and go from there.

I'd be interested in seeing how other people do this as well!
