What is there REALLY to do for SEO clients? Don't feel I'm doing enough...

Hi,

I'm helping my friend out on SEO part, and well aware of using PBNs and get tier 2 links. But this friend of mine has been building the eCommerce business for years, and I'm very hesitant to risk using those methods.

I dug through the site and realized the previous SEO vendor submitted the site to Italian, French and German sites to get TLD links and I don't think it should continue.

So right now all I'm really doing is mostly on-site SEO stuff and alot of nagging.
- Linked Analytics + Webmaster to get the search query data .
- Recommending a site overhaul since it's simply not mobile friendly, currently underway with their developer.
- Going to submit the sitemaps and inspect the site architecture once the overhaul is done.
- Nagged at my friend to get the product meta descriptions filled out since it's mostly empty, supplement with recommended keywords for each product page.
- Identify influencers within our region / niche to get the business to reach out to them to guest post.
- Audit blog posts on the keyword + copywriting aspects.
- Identify keywords to create content around.
- Identify trending social posts to "rip" for content ideas.

In short...I'm simply telling my friend what to do. And things are not always done since they are busy, and I'm concerned if they start feeling they're paying me for nothing. Also...since I'm telling them what to do, they'll start to know what's going on. Not sure if I can continue this "consultation" model.

I'm not being paid much, so I stayed away from content creation. But I feel I'm not achieving results since much of these are pretty dependent on my friend creating the content, which is a time-sucker / headache. Overall organic search traffic is increasing, but I don't feel it's due to my work since I started recently.

Please advise!

What's the domain TF? Generally a quick win for a domain with some 'weight' is to add unique copy to the homepage and key category pages. Our deliverable for clients on a retainer is: quality links built, an increase in quality traffic and revenue generated (MoM/YoY).

Other quick wins....

If it's a big ecommerce site, check the indexing. Interlinking more will help get product pages indexed (tiered linking - recommended or similar products displayed on product pages can help with this). Look for pages in position 11-15 (on page 2). With some link building you can push them onto page #1 which will deliver more traffic/conversions.

Get a subscription to Majestic or Ahrefs - review the top 5-10 competitor back links for each key category or product term. Go after their links (outreach).

One of best ways to get backlinks is to write a detailed resource/guide or to built a tool. Identify a niche group of blogs/webistes and create content/a guide/tool that would appeal to their readers (http://alltop.com/)

Hi Izzy,

You're talking about trustflow? If so, it's 10 for the top level domain.

Those quality links built, are you referring to those anchor text links + inter-linking within the site?

Look for pages in position 11-15 (on page 2). With some link building you can push them onto page #1 which will deliver more traffic/conversions.
Yep, dug out a couple. Have been notifying those pages to my friend to work on their copy ... header tags...meta desc....Linking building, I suppose you're referring to external links? These "legibly" involve posting on forums or guest posting on other sites right? Again these are content based, which is their responsibility.

And yep, using both majestic and ahref plus semrush to ID the top few competitors. Most of these links are those influencer blogs or local portals. Again this requires my friend to write the content to post on their site. Sometimes these blogs / portals compile those "list of top things to do..." reports or guides and I'm nagging at my friend to reach out to those blog / portal owners to be listed on those kind of content.

And yes, my friend has published several resource guides and getting some links back and eyeballs.

At the moment I feel my friend's individual product pages need alot of work, and most of the to-do's are content writing.

I'm paid about 300 USD per month to do all those I mentioned for 4 months.

Izzy, how much are you charging your clients for this amount of work?

Oh man. Good luck, it's a long road with a TF of 10... We charge about $150 p/h - but do everything from writing content, seeding, outreach etc.
