Hey everyone,
I thought to myself, how can I find geos that are a little bit out of my comfort zone (e. g. my homeland) and did the following:
- googled Smartphone usage per country and found this article on Wikipedia --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ne_penetration (yes, it really does say penetration... *lol*)
- searched for something I like and checked it on Decisive's planner (impressions available)
Following these two steps I found Sweden (spot # 7 in the wikipedia article with a smartphone penetration ratio of ~63% - roughly two thirds) and around 60 million impressions available on 320x50 in Decisive... I chose Sweden over Norway, although Norway is spot #5 but only has 6.3 million daily impressions available on Decisive.
Am I doing it right, are there other ways?
Looking for your input ;-)
Phil
I would look for many impressions at a reasonable price (average CPM). You also need to test if the offer you are promoting converts in that geo. Some things simply won't convert in some countries, for reasons usually unknown to us, but we can rely on data to see it doesn't. Sometimes even geos that look good on paper, are vert competitive. Malaysia comes to mind as such a geo from what I know.
thanks manu, for the feedback.
I think these are all valid points but somehow you have to come up with something to start, right? something like a "point zero" or similar and that's where my questions was focussed at. Or are you saying, that it really doesn't matter?
My idea was that I didn't want to waste my money on geos, where e. g. the penetration is not that high or where there's not that much traffic available (see my Norway Sweden comparison above).
Of course, you wouldn't want to waste money on geos that have low smartphone penetration or very low volume. But then from the high geos that pass those criteria, you end up with many Tier 1 countries which are more competitive and more expensive overall. Your best bet is probably Tier 3 countries that have good volume on your preferred traffic source. Smartphone penetration might not be so important, if the population is big enough to still generate nice volume. As you can see, Norway has great coverage but volume is still quite low
It's not so likely the geo will make it or break it for you actually. I know people that even went to Tier 1 all the time and made it work for certain offers on certain traffic sources. Since you don't know any geos, a good bet would be to check what geos your offer has and choose 2-3 from there to test, either in parallel or sequentially.
i would go on a different approach to your question.
rather asking what Geo to start with i would go and first find myself couple of offers that i know working well (asking your AM is the best way) and then look to promote it in the top converting Geo's.
you will probably get a list of several offers and now its the time for you to chose the Geo's you want to work on from that list.
in a case your campaign isn't performing well you will know that its you that doing *"something wrong" and not the offer.
*wrong target audience / banners / bids / traffic source / promotion method.....
