I know there's a decisive blacklist floating around, which honestly helped me a lot. I've also been blacklisting some app/sites on my offers so it'd be interesting to hear some insights from the gurus

How to set up your own "rules of thumb" will depend on your situation.

You'll want to set rules to cut faster but with less certainty if:
There are a lot of placements so you don't need to be sure before cutting.
You're already using a good converting lander and offer so you can be more strict with placements.

You'll want to set rules to cut slower but with more certainty if:
There aren't a lot of placements so you need to be relatively sure before cutting.
You're still testing landers and offers so it wouldn't be fair to be too strict with placements.

It would be best to use the spreadsheet calculator from the link above, when your banners and lander and offer are already proven to convert well. Otherwise, you'd be cutting placements that you think are bad, when it may be your banners/landers/offer that are "bad".

In addition to using the spreadsheet calculator, you can also decide on some "rules of thumb" yourself.

Keep in mind that the most accurate way is to cut based on conversions/leads, NOT based on clicks or CTR. Having said that, if there are too many clicks without a conversion, or if the CTR is very low, you may be able to cut them before the spreadsheet calculator tells you to cut.

Simply use your logical reasoning. For example:

Payout = 0.30, Placement X is spending 0.60CPM but is only giving you 1 banner click every 200 impressions.
A quick calculation will tell you that you'll need one conversion for every 2.5 clicks from that placement just to break even! (And this is assuming you're direct-linking without a lander.) And based on your past experience you know that it would be very unlikely for a placement to have such a high conversion rate. So you can cut Placement X.

As for landing pages - I would suggest NOT to cut them based on CTR. I've seen some landers with very low CTR that have very high CR (conversion rate). This post talks about how to cut landing pages:

When it comes to landing pages, it would be best to compare them to the current-best landing page and cut the worst ones. That way your landing pages will improve over time.

I know this is a confusing topic - but hope I've cleared some things up for you instead of making you more confused!
