Hello! I'm an experience graphic designer, but have no prior experience in AM. My initial interest is getting started in Mobile. However, a successful affiliate marketing friend expressed concern, stating that mobile is too competitive atm, and that I'd be better off starting on desktop. His philosophy was that since a lot of people are jumping on mobile, desktop would be slightly less cut throat. Off the top of his head, he suggested Yahoo Gemini. Of course, that's his opinion, and not necessarily accurate, but I wanted to get others' perspective.
Q#1: What are your recommendations on Mobile vs Desktop to a complete newb?
Q#2: Where can I find a detailed list of Mobile offer types (PIN Submits, Sweeps, etc)? I saw a list on the forum, but now I can't find it.
Q#3: What are the types of Mobile traffic? (I keep seeing on affiliate network applications traffic types such as Network, Post, Banner, Contextual, etc., and I'm not 100% what some of them are and what I should checkmark for mobile)
Thanks in advance for the help.
A#1: Desktop maybe a little easier to get started with, but Mobile is gaining momentum and so you might want to get in there and get your feet wet in this vertical.
A#2: Each network has different offers. Sign up to a few networks and see what they have.
A#3: There are Mobile pops, display, push notifications... I dont know how the application process is in the network(s) you are referring to sso dont really know how to answer this. Maybe you should just check a random option (Banner) and be done with it and once you are accepted - explain to your AM what you do.
I hope this helps.
I think if you are the kind of person that depends on being told stuff vs the one that tests things out, then aff marketing may be difficult. That's because I feel the whole industry is very competitive, and stuff is changing and getting more competitive all the time.
After re-reading this ^^^, I wanted to make sure you know this is a general statement. I'm not saying that's you
The meaning could be confused
I'm not an active affiliate, but if I were you, I'd focus all most or all of my attention on figuring out mobile.
Take a look at this:

The whole report is awesome and worth checking out, but look at page 16. To me that $25B represents the affiliate arbitrage opportunity until the gap closes and it gets too expensive to buy mobile traffic.
Remember: The fact that something is competitive usually means that's where the money is or that where everyone thinks the money is heading.
Thanks!
