XXX mystery site adventure

we started a site that intends to deliver value to our users, and we constantly test promotion methods and content to see which engages the user more.

we are trying to understand how to use these stats to study the engagement level of users, and what variables should we look out for as an indicator of success?

what kind of data should we look for?

how would u monetize these users?

You want to make sure that you have a low bounce rate. I think Google also takes bounce rate into factor when determing your site or page's rankings in the SERPS. The Lower the bounce rate the more engaged the user is ie. staying on your page longer to read the content.

Monetizing websites is usually done through adsense, you can also sell ad space on buysellads but i think they take 25%. Once you have a large sites you can do direct sales to advertisers...

What are you trying to achieve here?

we want a source of users that we can keep selling to, which is a change from the standard buy traffic and promote product. we want more control over the traffic, and also offer.

actually we havent really gone to SEO yet. right now its just direction promotion of the link...

we want more control over the product, which means we want to make sure the product is something that the user would want to use, and buy again.

You stats aren't bad at all.

The three important metrics are bounce rate, pages per visit and time on site.

Low bounce rate means your users are viewing more than one page on you site. So, they are somewhat interested.

The number of pages tells you how much content they consume on your website. The more, the better.

And session duration is the amount of time they spent on your website before they clicked an ad or typed something else in the browser address bar. Obviously the longer the better.

In order to understand how to monetise them, pull demographics data from Google Analytics (there's a tab there). This will give you an idea who these people are so you can find an offer for them.

is there any standards we can compare to? what are the major sites where we can gather data on and what are their bounce rates like?

how long do users usually spend on a good content site?

thanks for the sharing!

These are questions similar to "what's the ideal standard banner to lander to offer conversion rate". There's no one size fits all numbers.

As I said, your numbers are pretty good.

3 minute sessions with 4 pages on average and less than 30% bounce rate is pretty awesome in my books.

Returning uses are bouncing though, so it seems there's not enough reason to come back or they saw all they wanted in a single visit and there's nothing new for them to explore => post fresh content for often or feature your existing content better (top posts, recommended posts, etc.).

PS. I am a recovering SEO addict, so I am speaking from search traffic perspective but it should probably apply to your case as well.

You will want to provide some more info about the demographic, country, your current cost of traffic and how you are planning to monetise.

Right now it is really hard to give any real meaningful suggestions. These stats you have could be really good, really bad, or so so based on the context.

You might want to check the referrers to the site.

Your visits might not be as many as it seems. Most new sites get hit with a shit ton of referrer spam from Russian services these days.. Check for social button referrers, or seo services etc.

If that is the case, you don't have near enough data to work with yet.

Other than that, just work on traffic. Engagement seems fine, and that will vary somewhat niche depending. Find where your "niche" hangs out and leak content to them.

For instance, here's stats from one site I own. Engagement is terrible, always has been, but it's the nature of that site, people load a page, grab what they need, and leave no matter what you try. Still makes money though. I'd expect heavy content / reading sites to be a lot higher engaging than this.

@dynamicsoul you gotta make harder for them to grab what they want without jumping through the hoops that make you money.

Stuff like opt-in in their face before they can see/download anything, multi-page posts with next, next, next, etc.

thank you for feedback. we are updating content regularly, maybe just 1-2 videos a day, not yet having the manpower to refresh as much as other sites do. we might want to explore some SEO traffic to see how that works out. but first we need to figure what SEO is all about.

our traffic is mainly from the philippines, male, and our cost of traffic is just employee cost which is less than us500/month. all traffic is generated by our VA by posting links, so its all free except for his salary. we could add in 1-2 more VAs into this promotion initiative.

we are not too sure how we want to monetize this yet... its adult traffic, we could just slap a exoclick banner in or a popads pop... but we want to do this differently. we want the customers to actually see ads that are relevant to their interest, like google adwords. the content they like is of a specific nature, so we are testing out similar products.

this site is built on a system, which we focus on more than the actual site. which means we can replicate this site onto another country (or so we think?)

our site data looks about the same... maybe more engaging? but lower volumes. we just checked the referrals, they are mostly coming from our own promotion methods. we are testing a series of sites to promote our content freely for now. we are not yet buying traffic since this is a side project, and meant to explore business outside of our normal traffic buying model.

how do you monetize your site?

It is definitely a lower value demographic, but since your traffic costs are quite low, I am sure you can eventually get this profitable by testing out different monetisation options.

It's fine. I've had that site for like 7 years. It does ok.

the purpose of doing in the Philippines is to document the site creation process due to employee specialization in the philippines. it is now documented 70%, and we should be able to replicate this in other countries. we are testing products related to the best content they are interested in.
