Mobile by Chris - Learning how to kill it with Mobile App Installs

Hello everybody,

My name is Chris. I'm a 19 year old Aussie guy from Sydney, Australia. (Hit me up if you are in Sydney)

I ran my first internet advertisement ever last night (19th of June, 2015) at 10pm! I'm determined to keep learning how to make mobile app installs profitable for the next few months. Now that I'm in Australia, just having come back from travel, I am starting a decent paying job this Tuesday to fund my campaigns and buy lots of data to learn with. I am committing $350+ a week for the forseeable future ($50+ a day) to run campaigns and learn.

In six months time, I will either be a pretty unlucky dude who spent about $10K with no results, or I will have had some decent or more success. I skipped university (would have done a 5 year double degree which I would have completed by the end of 2019) because I knew I could be freer and make more money without a degree.

I have done way too much reading on mobile marketing, and AM in general and I'm so excited to put what I have read into massive action.

Just starting out advertising on mobile, never done any other internet marketing before but I've been reading about it so I am up to speed with how it all works, just got no practical skills or experience.

The goal basically is to learn to process of 1) creating my first big profit campaign and 2) constantly replicating that success over time by learning a solid process. I eventually want to take on employees of some sort once I do eventually start making a bit of money because I know that the bottleneck will be me and I need to learn management and hiring skills ASAP.

For now though, my short term goals are the following:
1) Get my first AM conversion ever!
2) Get a -50% ROI
3) Make ANY profit

Anyway, I WILL meet these goals eventually. Just need to keep learning and practicing.

Can't wait to REALLY get into this!

I will be posting my campaign results here.

Thanks for reading guys

So here are some details from my first 24 hours of my first campaign:

Followed mobile appetizer, running a $2 payout offer (couldn't find a <$1 fast enough that had decent volume with the affiliate network). Running the ads in Australia in English.

Type: Mobile App Install
Name: Outcast Odyssey
Country: Australia
Payout: $2
Ad network: Decisive

The game is basically an adventure mythical based app card game. I chose a pretty crap angle to be honest: that you don't have to wait for in-game resources like energy to reload. Also, my ads are terrible. They look cheap and crap and in my first banner ad ever I actually misspelled the game title Outcast Odyssey to "Odessey". I let it run like that - no one knows how to spell Odyssey.

First angle chosen ever. First banner ads ever. Just went for it. I will get better once I figure out some banner ad basics.

Here are the banner ads (320x50) that I built:

I divided, as instructed, the campaigns into WIFI APP/SITE and MOBILE APP/SITE. Four categories.

WIFI APP: 91 clicks with a 0.40% Click Through Rate (CTR) and $0.05 Cost Per Click (CPC)
MOBILE APP: 16 clicks with a 0.17% CTR and $0.09 CPC
WIFI SITE: 56 clicks with a 0.09% CTR and $0.06 CPC
MOBILE SITE: 0 clicks lol

So these are the creatives' results:

I don't there is enough data to indicate clear winners actually.

Here is the results by operating system on WIFI APP, now even though the campaign is iOS (apple) only, some of the operating system versions get more traffic and one in particular get insane amounts of clicks - I don't know why, but it just does.

Now here is a screenshot of clicks by gender on WIFI APP. While most of it is unidentified, it seems like females are WAYY more likely to click. Now, my fairly unfounded theory is that the device is in the name of the mother who typically lets their small child, their son or daughter use their phone and kids just generate lots of unintentional clicks in whatever apps they play.

Here are the main apps that the ads get clicks on under WIFI APP:

Here is a list under MOBILE APP which lists the carriers' results - I see no real difference in carriers besides some get more traffic. I know that Telstra has a higher income demographic because they cost more. Also I know that in terms of network speeds through hearsay and personal experience it goes by: Telstra - REALLY GOOD, Optus - okay i suppose (i use optus on my phone), Vodaphone - sucks crap (i used to have them, and they have a terrible reputation in Australia but i hear may be getting better). That info was for any decent affiliate who wanted to get the low down on the main carriers in Australia and might use the info.
Anyway, this is the screenshot.

SO MY TOTAL RESULTS:

Spent: $9.33
Revenue: ZERO
P/L: -100% or -$9.33

So far, that's all the info from Decisive tracking I think may be useful up till now. I don't know. If you have ANY feedback, advice, tips, or anything, leave a comment so I can learn a bit and so others can read

Thanks for reading.

Cheers

Hey, I had a quick look at the game on google and my initial thoughts were this game has insane graphic. Your banners don't justify that. Not sure what energy your are talking about...but I don't know much about card games either. Sorry I can't give much advice but here is a screen shot banner for this...I couldn't find much on wrw. Yeah, thanks for that bro @webdev

I'm going to keep following the appetizer cookbook and all that, but tomorrow I am going to brainstorm some more angles.

From what I've seen, there is not a huge variation in the click through rates for my ads so I'm not really sure that heaps of different creatives are the key to getting a good response. Tomorrow, I'll wake up and pump out 5 new angles with 5 different creatives each.

I'm going to at least use for a few ads this advice from a post by Mr Green: http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...mplate-inside)

I'll definitely try an angle which says how good the graphics are. Really I got no idea how best to execute an ad like that but I'll give it a shot and post up the results when I get some decent data.

Ugly banners CAN work but for the most part games are a bit different. You need KICK ASS banners. Have a browse and see what Clash of Clans do...their banners look great, are fun and a great example

Its true. I just launched a gaming mobile offer and I spent $13 so far with NO conversions.

Time to upgrade my banners
