I Need a Way to Host Email Without All Eggs In Google's "Ban Hammer" Basket

I am in the process of moving all of all of my companies and clients websites and subsequent email accounts to a cloud server and dropping Cpanel. I want to keep the sever resources to a minimum by serving static content through CDN's, using a remote control panel to manage the server etc, etc. All of that is not a problem but I need to find the best and most reliable way to host the email accounts? I do not like to (like many of us marketers) put any eggs in the Google basket, let alone all of them.

Any ideas or experience?

So you do not see a problem using Google Docs, Apps For Work, Drive etc ?
