This to any of you guys that own your own apps in the iOS or Android market...
How effective are push notifications nowadays? I mean for personal usage and not using an external advertiser.
I own an app which is a deal based app (not live) in my local area and wondered if push notifications was a viable tactic to get the user back onto the app or whether its very restricted now?
I have searched google etc but can't quite see what i'm after, can anyone shed some light?

I'm seeing a push notification opening rate of about 1-6%, depending on the message (on iOS)
