So I know email isn't dead, but DAMN I can't get past the spam folder!..any advice?

Hey,

So I'm getting back to email marketing after taking a break from it for about a year. I was planning to go with Getresponse for my autoresponder but pretty much every email I keep sending with them to myself goes to the spam box (not a good sign)

Anybody have any advice on better email providers or just ways to stay out the spam box more often?

Try a bigger ESP like Constant Contact or MailChimp. Get Response could just have bad delivery and you could be doing everything right. I don't know what you're sending though so its hard to say.

Make sure your content and subject line aren't full of spammy words like free, etc that could be causing you to go to spam.

Let us know if that helped or if you have any other questions!

Did you authenticate your domain with dkim and spf? If not, that's your problem right there. Go to their help section or contact their support. Once you do that you should be fine.

When you get to where you have a decent opt in list size (say 40,000 names or more), I highly recommend a reputation management service like EmailDelivered that manages sending from your own domain, and lets you build an excellent Sender Score. The issue you run into with all services like Aweber and GetResponse (and they are fine to start with) is you're at the mercy of what other people are doing on that domain, even though those services are managing their reputation.

When you build a great reputation, you don't have to worry as much about the words you use since reputation over time is based more on how engaged the audience is (opens, clicks, replies, low bounces, and low spam complaints). And you don't have to worry about other people mailing from your domain since you're the only one on it. What you will discover is, an excellent Sender Score is a real asset, and you can mail to names other people can't.

Hey _mcr_ tell me more about authenticating my domain. I haven't heard about that before.

Will it help my deliverability even if I still deliver with getresponse for the moment?

My funnel is really content heavy. For example my first email is just simply giving the sub the ebook they optin for, but I'll make sure to keep spam type words out the headline.

Quick question: Other than "free" what are some more words that might trigger automatic spam filter.

And mail chimp looks nice, and its free for up to 2k subs. Thanks I will definitely set up an account and do some test.

I've seen more and more spam emails reaching my inbox from senders using gmail address rather than business emails. Do you think this is a coincidence or does using a gmail address with autoresponder help in deliverability?

How about.. (might not be the case).. It's the download link / destination that is triggering spam?

What about split testing with the ebook download link on a thank you page, redirected to page right after submit, and your first email is simply a nice text based email introducing yourself and welcoming to the list?

Inboxing got really really complicated in the past 2 years. I presume you are talking about gmail or any other specific provider ?

Anyway besides the basics: dkim, spf, nice unsub links, no blackslists on domains etc, proper smtp provider, domain and ip warmup (slow - organic-like increase of receivers and sent mails), etc..

The big signal today is the "user engagement" defined by: not email opens or clicks but replies. So optimally you need to maintain a high reply rate to your msgs.

Another thing to keep in mind is I don't know what e-mail service you're using thats junking, but junking Outlook does not necessarily mean you're junking other/major ones. The majority of your users may be Yahoo/AOL etc . You ARE definitely inboxing some people, maybe more than you think. But there's always some room for improvement of course

Yea, good point that's something I can definitely split test.

but I will let this campaign run on getresponse for a moment and update you guys with the deliverability stats next week.

Thanks

Authenticating your domain is a must if you're serious about inboxing. It's done at the DNS level, so you do it where you have your DNS handled (your registrar probably in your case).

Once logged into getresponse, try to find the settings for this, or ask their support. they will give you two lines to add to your DNS. It's quite simple.

Once you do that, you can verify whether it's working correctly at www.mail-tester.com

And yes, it will help you even if you deliver. You may deliver to yourself and some other recipients, but how do you know you're not being rejected by other recipients because you're lacking authentication? The only way to find out is to have a proper setup. It will also help increase the overall score of your emails so they always deliver. Without going into a lengthy explanation, just do it.
