Airbnb Take Their Ads To The Next Level...

I was walking over Hungerford Bridge in London on Saturday and saw a floating house in the middle of the Thames, everyone was looking at it wondering what the hell it was doing there. Then a tug started to push it towards the bridge and I saw the airbnb logo near the top of the house, and realised it was a huge floating ad for them. Crazy creativity. Took this pic from my phone:

Yeah, it was docked near Canary Wharf last week.

Great viral marketing ... all those instagram posts = free marketing!

Awesome! Respect to Airbnb for their creative. You can actually stay in that boat.

The view from inside:

Poor hotels must be taking a decent hit.

Stay in a lovely place from airbnb when i was in Taipei last year and it was certainly a fantastic alternative to a hotel room, considering the price and convenience of the place.

This is slightly off topic but the genius behind AirBNB is all execution. It's as if most people had never heard of HomeAway, VRBO or any of the vacation rental sites. Some of it was great timing [mobile becoming ubiquitous, people needing money in a down economy], but their execution is/was phenomenal. They built a 2 sided marketplace, and as opposed to the HomeAway types, they based their model on transaction fees.

Why is that a big deal? Because you're now incentivized to perform for the host. The old model was advertising listings, the new model is almost CPA in nature - they only get paid when a room is booked. They also took upon themselves the trust role, which I think was missing before too.

Just goes to show you how it's usually less about the idea and more about the work.
