New's apps... hmm, well I think for that kind of app the first thing I would do is seek out the demographic that might use it more - e.g. business folk.
On the other hand, you could spin it in a way to focus on trendy youngsters, e.g. "Insert unbelievable news story here - never miss a story - get the app" -- or something similar.
"Monster squid almost sinks boat -- read the story first here"
"Apple stock just took a 5% hit. Read why Steve Jobs would be spinning in his grave"
"Candy Crush could be killing your sex life. New research shows... - click to read the full story".

If I were to build a news app for a first attempt, I'd go niche specific, learn the ropes, what the users want from a niche app, what they don't want, what works for monetizing, what doesn't and take it from there..
So, tennis news, cricket news, football news, or even drill down further.. football team specific news, sport tournament specific news, celebrity / film award / event specific news.. you get the idea.
If you go deeper into niches like event specific, you can add features such as stadium layouts, transfers, other related news worthy items.. etc Become an authoritative source for a specific thing.

I think "trendy youngsters" is a better demographic. Business folk would look for mainstream, well known news outlets but youngsters are more probable (IMO) to look for unknown sources to give them news and such.
Zeno`s angles seems great actually.

Thing is, those apps are two a penny already.. Probably the best thing you need to do.. is research the competition first!
There was a great thread posted on here a few weeks ago by a guy who offered an app building tutorial.. can't find it now though!!

So you're saying that
it doesn't really matter if it is true or not, just be interesting? something to catch the eye?..I always went for real things that happened. I looked for true articles inside the app and made them as breaking news bla bla.

By the way what category would you recommend promoting this kind of app? news? or entertainment or something else more interesting.
Im running it with Airpush and i usually start with uncategorized but maybe i should be more specific with categorizing..
Thanks everyone for commenting!

I would check with your Airpush rep, but last time I spoke to them the categories were only for internal reference, and didn't allow you to target those types of apps for your campaigns. Maybe it changed?

Who cares? If you want to convert them on the app then you probably can't deep link them into that story if it existed anyway.
Most people want interesting or current stories, and if you just find something that really happened and use that in ads... the story itself will get old fast - and if it's well-known then your ads get stale.
If you offer up something to arouse their curiosity you a) aren't promising anything, it's just clickbait, and b) this may trigger the user to try and search for it, leading to better engagement within the app and potentially better lead quality / KPI's from the advertiser's perspective.
News has tended very strongly toward social / viral elements because this lets 'serious' news agencies approach a much, much wider audience - something which many have to do to survive.

I'm surprised no one's said this.
To find the best angle, look at the market - not the product.
edit: hope that didn't make me sound like a know-it-all; I mean it respectfully.

@raymondduke could you expand your point please?

Sure.
(By the way, I'm new here... how do forum notifications work? I don't believe I got one...)
I'm going to try to keep this as simple and short as possible.
I can write a book about this, but I won't do that here. (yet.)
Okay. So, basically, you want to begin with your market - not the product.
The market decides what works, not your product.
Not your creative.
Not your landing page.
Market. Market. Market.
When you get your market, everything else falls into place.
To best explain, let's go back to the OP:
Im thinking about angles for New's app...I would love to hear your wisdome.
This guy (or gal..?) ^ is looking for angles for his new's app.
Now, in order to figure out the right angles... angles that are targeted, specific, annnnnn - most importantly, high-converting, we must look at who the app is for.
In other words:
The Market.
Is it for millenials, or baby boomers?
Is it an app like the New York Times... or Mashable?
Is a daily news app for people on the go? Instant news for people who want to always know what's up? Local news for people who want to oooooonly know what's happening in the city? Global news for people who do lots of internation biz?
Different audiences want to read the news for different reasons.
I'd love to help out more if the OP can provide more info about the app.
I feel like I can better explain this in a brand new post about how to think about your market/angle before thinking about the product.
In the meantime, here is one of my favorite places to go for Weird News.

^ hillarious.

Oh mate! Thanks for this piece here!
A'propos notifications, you can 'subscribe to the topic' I think in thread tools if on desktop.
On mobile I use tapatalk and however 'thank you' triggers error, rest seems to work fine.
On tapatalk you subscribe tapping star icon, yet you can view 'participated' or 'sibscribed' topics. Pretty handy if you want to keep only reasonable list of subscribed topics.

No problem! I love helping out with anything copywriting/conversion related.
And thanks for reminding me about Subscribe To Topic.
It's been a while since I've used a forum.
I think I got it set up now; it was under settings.

The forum has @mention capability I believe but it is definitely turned off. Turning that kind of thing on is really bad for productivity if it pings your email, and of course most busy people would turn it off if they could so it would have limited effectiveness.
Best way is to subscribe to threads :-)
