John's first ''Serious'' App install campaign - Booster app

Sup folks!

Gonna post here a follow along for my first app install campaign. I did that a while ago when I got started in adult and it had helped me a lot, so hoping for the best here! Going to be as transparent as I can so I can get the best advice possible from you guys. In exchange, if this ever takes off you'll have a good idea on how you could promote it too

Offer : DU Speed Booster

Payout : 0.22$

Network : MUNDOMedia

Country : International except 40 countries. (I started off with Ukraine with a tip from my AM and the traffic is cheap)

Traffic source : Decisive

Method : Trying to follow the Mobile Cookbook!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I started this campaign 3 days ago, so I have roughly 3 days worth of data, here's what it looks like:

Name:	banners.PNG
Views:	154
Size:	103.4 KB
ID:	6894

So the only campaign that has gotten any conversions was the Apps-Carrier combo with 4 conversions (0.88$) on 11.40 spend.

On all of those i'm split testing DL and LP, with my LP averaging a 2-3% CTR which is horrible, not sure what's up with that.

3 conversions where from DL, 1 from LP.

Here's what my LP looks like :

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Banners :

I am running with 9 banners, all with different designed (found them all over forums and over time). Here's what they say :

Make your phone faster than it has ever been!

Is your android speed slow?

Double your phone's speed, boost now! (1 conv)

Need a turbo fast phone? (1 conv)

Is your phone slower than before?
clean it now for free

Download DU Speed Booster (1 conv)
100% free on google play

Of course those banners have capitalization and they're all animated, just wanted to give an idea.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Course of action :

Not too sure on how to proceed since i'm getting so few conversions.. Currently just cutting Apps that spent 1$ and the ones that have garbage CTR's (below 0.50% and spent at least 2x offer payout)

All the banners and landers are in english. I didn't translate them into ukrainian yet, as they're getting really good CTR's.

Not too sure as what should be my next step here since I have so few data to work with. Any tips/help is appreciated!

Thank you

Hey John!

First question: Have you tried direct-linking from banner to offer without using a lander? Sometimes a banner is all that's necessary to get people to download a free app.

Hi Amy,

Yes been splitting equally Direct Linking VS Landing Page in all campaigns. So far DL has 3 conversions and LP only 1. However I was hoping to get a little more data before I call this a significant test..!

Good start man, after your more comfortable make sure you test the top 4-5 countries or even more, one country might not work but others will for sure, key is not to give up! Also keep an eye on site ID's ! Goodluck!

*Thumbs up!* for waiting for statistically significant results!

Just noticed that you DID talk about split-testing DL with a lander - don't know how I managed to miss that!

If I were you I'd wait for more data to come in. If you see that an angle is working better you can then maybe pause the others and make more banners for the promising angle. And if DL works better, I personally would just skip testing landers for now to focus 100% on testing banners and cutting placements.

There's a spreadsheet you can use to cut placements, but I wouldn't recommend that you use it just yet, because right now you're using banners that haven't been tested, so cutting placements would be unfair (to the placements). It's like getting two people to do a job and when it doesn't get done, you can't justify firing any of them. However, you'd still want to cut the really bad placements. Your current cutting strategy will do until your overall banner quality improves (either by cutting the worse banners, or by adding better banners, or both).

Speaking of which: You may want to consider cutting Grindr and flashlight apps. Those typically don't convert well. You may also want to consider blacklisting the apps on Decisive's top blacklisted apps.

Thanks for a great follow-along so far!

UPDATE 2:

Alright so I kinda fucked up today. Read on some posts that I should switch to CPM bidding and try to increase it a bit to get more traffic. Well I did and bid 0.25CPM for my campaigns (Smart CPM bids 0.02). Well I woke up and the campaign that had conversions spent 42$, no leads. I blacklisted all the targets that had spent more than 1$ (couple) and switched back to Smart CPM.

Should I call it quits for Ukraine, I mean i'm not an expert but it's converting extra poorly. Or should I keep cutting placements and maybe change all of my banners?

From friday to monday i'll be away so I won't be able to do any work. I could either let it run Smart CPM, hope for the best and cut placements, or stop Ukraine all together and try a new country on monday.

Thanks for any infos!

*Thanks vortex and gilfwolf for chiming in, help is really appreciated guys!

Are your banners translated? Did you pay for those translations? Are any banners performing better than the others?

I also find that setting up a frequency cap when testing out new campaigns helps. In theory it should prevent your ads from being displayed to the same individual over and over again.

Sorry to interrupt you guys, I'm currently on tapatalk and can't see images, is everything working on desktops?
Great follow up!

My banners are not translated yet. Wanted to give it a first shot with english and the CTR's were great, so I haven't translated them yet. Wanted to see if I could get a couple more conversions before I did that. All 4 conversions come from 4 different banners so fat, so nope.

Never played with freq cap on decisive, perhaps I should thanks !

05-15-2015 06:29 PM #10 vortex (Senior Moderator)

Did most of the conversions come from a particular angle? Or different angles?

With that kind of ad spend and only 4 conversions - I personally would move onto another geo / offer. Will more experienced people please comment on this?

That is, unless one or more of the following is true:

-you feel you could come up with MUCH better angles than the current ones

-you believe you were getting traffic from placements that were crap that drained a big part of your budget (that you have blacklisted or will blacklist)

Basically, if you don't feel you could either do something to massively improve the conversion rates, or something to drastically cut non-converting traffic - then I'd say bye bye to this offer/geo.

I'll second Amy.

In my experience (with boosters at least), a country is either going to convert pretty well right off the bat or it's going to flop. With a payout this low and a decent spend with few conversions, it makes sense to cut the country and look elsewhere (assuming you tested 3-4 angles that aren't horseshit). It's hard to optimise something when you can't get enough data to do so.
You can try and battle it out and keep burning money, or you can look to new pastures that might give you higher ground to start from.

Freq cap is definitely a good idea too.

You should definitely translate, it's cheap and will have big effect for the cost. Also I have run this offer myself on 3 networks and the difference in conversion rates was insane. So split test if you can.

05-16-2015 03:34 PM #14 mr_mac (Member)

Goldenjo,

If I may put my 3p here (since I never run a campaign, so from user point of view) - I went through your copys and I would second weebay's words - if you target Ukraine, get those translated. I have seen similar to DU ads when in the UK, but actually I purchased it when I was in Poland (led by PL copy). It was need of the moment to use such app, but I'm a lead for someone eventually. Worth to speak to people their language. Split test English/Ukrainian/(Russian maybe)?

05-16-2015 11:57 PM #15 vortex (Senior Moderator)

All GREAT suggestions!

Translations are cheap indeed! See this post for options.

Split-testing the offer across multiple networks is a must. I've seen a difference of over 200% CR for the same offer across different networks! Boy was I glad I did THAT test!

May / may not be enough to salvage your current campaign, but are definitely tips you'd want to implement for future campaigns IMO.

I had zero conversions on one network for this offer and 4 percent on another!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all of those feedbacks on this thread. I was away from friday-monday so couldn't get any work done (no internet while camping). Before I left I had set-up something in Saudi Arabia with the banners and landers translated and everything failed miserably. Basically, with those 2 campaigns I didn't get a single lead in 4 days on MundoMedia...

Here's what it looks like :

So out of 13 000 uniques I got 4 app installs? I'm not a Super Pro but this seems beyond impossible for me. Ran a few APP campaigns before and results never have been so garbage.

Sure as hell going to cut Saudi Arabia and Ukraine from now. Going to set-up a new country for that offer. Going to try to get on a few networks that have the DU Battery Saver offer. On top of my mind YeahMobi has it. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the tips and tricks guys! Going to split test networks + set-up a frequency cap + translate in native right off the start, appreciate your help and will post screenshots with the new country once I get data (Most likely tomorrow or wednesday max!)

Du on appflood converted best from the 3 I tried, possibly as they have different server options so you can be near the traffic. Did you get an Arabic reader to check your lp and banners? Arabic is very difficult to just cut and paste . It's right to left unlike most other languages so you need to make other adjustments. It's a real headache.

This is very saturated app. Try and promote other stuff.
I made 6 figures running this app, but it was over a year ago

yeah i second attila's point. the app market is pretty difficult now. not many new good apps. the same old ones are seriously saturated.

There are still some good apps going around that can get you nice earnings.

You mean CR's are lower since people have been exposed to it for a long time?

Use app annie check diff geos look for apps that are rising fast on charts. Find em at cpa networks using offervault or similar and test test test. Thats it in a nutshell.

Did you try Brazil (no English copies!) and India? We see those kinds of app install ads on Facebook ...

UPDATE 3:

First of all thanks again for everyone that commented, really appreciate the feedbacks. Started split testing a few networks and found one that seems to be converting better that the other ones!

Added a few geos (now at 6 geos) and I am cutting placements right now. Letting all campaigns spend 15$ and cutting them afterwards if they haven't made 7$ or showing no promise. Will split test new banners/landers with campaigns that are still alive!
