Yup, I've been investigating video ads. Still not at the point where I'd say I've cracked them yet but I'm getting there.

Some random thoughts from experiments so far:

Currently my feeling is that video ads are overpriced on most major platforms. I'm not sure why that is, but I think the fact that brands love video has a lot to do with it. YouTube preroll ads look to be about twice as expensive as they should be for the value they give. YouTube image ads, meanwhile, are a lot more reasonable. (It could also be that I haven't cracked how to get maximum value from prerolls yet.)

YT prerolls are a very interesting format. The temptation is to try and open with a bang to persuade people to watch the rest of the ad, but given the pricing structure you actually want to get rid of as many non-qualified buyers as possible before you hit the 30 second mark. Of course, there's a balance to be struck there, but so far it appears that the number of people who watch through doesn't reduce your costs enough to offset the increase in non-buyers if you make something very compelling for buyers and non-buyers alike.

Generally with video you'll get high initial engagement, but persuading people to click is tricky. However, once they've clicked they tend to be pretty engaged - CVRs are high. (That's based on a limited dataset, mind you.)

Video on landers or lander-like things is the bomb. It's extremely good at engaging people provided it's an effective video. There's a reason that VSLs have pretty much taken over from conventional text-based landers in the infoproduct world.

It's very important to experiment with unconventional video formats - rather than the straight narrative ad we see on TV. That's true for me, and it'd be doubly true for anyone without a production company to make their videos for them Whiteboard videos, straight-to-camera interview, man-on-the-street stuff, kinetic typography, stills with voiceover and some nice camera moves - all worth a test.

Those are my initial thoughts! I know we have people with a lot of experience in video & internet marketing crossover on STM, though - more than me! Anyone else care to chime in?

Video ads are definitely not overpriced on Facebook for many geos ... not sure how long this will last though.

The thing that got me curious about this is how inmobi pushed their video ads for pubs (high eCPMs) and advertisers (high engagment) on their site, ads, and PR.
I agree with Caurman regarding using videos on landers.
One thing I noticed that is annoying is that you can't autoplay youtube videos on mobile as far as I know.Alternative of course is using your own player.
I think promoting game apps like this would be awesome.

@cmdeal - Yes, I probably should have explicitly excluded Facebook there. Haven't tested them enough to be sure of much, but the price/performance ratio seems good even in the Tier 1 geos I've tested.

Video ads on mainstream mobile networks are mostly aimed at branding campaigns who wants the ad to be ''seen''

In general the CTR's are too low and the CPM's too high. If you can edit the video's to have a strong call to action you might do better.

Google's video ads are the best IMO as they include the App description and install buttons in the ad itself. Places like Vungle are tough for affiliates
