Media buy with $500-1000 budget?

Hi all! First of all I'd like to say hi since it's my first post here There's so much information on this forum I don't even know what to focus on

Well, I was planning to jump into the display advertising with trial diet pills or skin products for women with fake news sites - my budget is max $1k, I'm a complete newbie in this subject. My plan for now is to spy some competition on What Runs Where (hope to make it on 3 day trial to not cut off the budget) and go either with Sitescout or contact website owners and try my luck with direct media buys. I've heard that Sitescout is generally not really recommended for newbies, especially with low budget, and this is where I'm a little bit confused. Are there any other, "easier" RTB networks? Where should I start?

Hi!

Before you jump in, consider this:

1. What does the law have to say about fake news sites and rebills?
2. What does the market look like in terms of competition and their budgets?
3. Will I be able to get enough meaningful data on my budget?
4. Do I have a real plan or do I count on luck being on my side?

1. Supposedly FTC works only in the USA, I'll do all the terms/conditions on the flog main page (I mean all the "Advertisement" heading and terms and conditions in footer). I live in the UK. I probably won't be doing it forever, just to get the ball start rolling.
2. Yep, after I choose the traffic source (Sitescout/direct media buys) I'll decide what niche is the best - weight loss, skin products, diabetes, hair loss etc based on competition.
3. That's what I'm asking for here. I don't have really any experience in it so to be honest I can't really estimate it now
4. I'm not going to start anything without strong plan. That's why I'm doing research now - I'm going to learn by reading as much as it's possible before I jump into the business.

Maybe PPV would be better for starting? Or mobile offers?

With that tight budget I strongly recommend to start with low paying offers to gather enough data to work with.
If you start with high paying offer like trial offers (and then it doesn´t matter what traffic source) you won´t be able to get enough data for your campaigns because of the high payouts of these offers the bids also are very high.
So better start with low paying offers where you get much more views/clicks for your budget and then try to work your way up from there.
Otherwise I guess you will get frightened that your budget blows up too fast that you will stop your campaign before you receive any worthwhile data and start to jump from offer to offer, from traffic source to traffic source.
Ant that won´t help you at all.

^ loads of sense in that post that will save you $$$$.

I'd stay away from Sitescout for UK trials, you'll find it hard to get sites to take creatives. Probably in denied types imo.. Maybe look into content.ad or something similar.

Yep, there are definitely several reasons not to start with the approach you're proposing.

As twinaxe says, high-payout offers are not good to start on if you have a limited(ish) budget. See http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...e-Often-Better for more on that.

Also, whilst the FTC doesn't operate in the UK, we have our own advertising regulation authorities, and they're not exactly teddy bears either. Trading Standards regularly take people to court for considerable sums of money. The usual rule of "don't pick a fight with a government body" still applies.

Overall, there are plenty of verticals to start out with less regulation to be worried about, and lower-payout offers for faster data. Give one of them a look!
