Don’t ignore Germany, even if you don’t know “Deutsch” (15)

Don’t ignore Germany, even if you don’t know “Deutsch”

Most non Europeans targeting a European country go for the UK first. It’s easy to see why; high population and all speak English.

But what if …

Germany has one of the highest GDP per capita ($44,000 – source Wiki). Why should you care? Well, you want to target customers who have money at disposal. More money at disposal means more (potential) spending.

The Germans have a similar GDP per capita but about 18% higher population.

But what if you could market to the Germans in English? No “Deutsch.”

Does that work?

We see lots of ads, particularly games, being marketed to Germans in English. Right beside big German advertising names.

So I wanted to see if this really works and run an app install ads to German users. All in English. With a crapy image, but a big name.

The results were pretty descent.

IDEA:

Next time you want to test an ad/offer/campaign, don’t forget Germany. Run it in English first. If you get good feedback, translate it in German.

Good luck / viel Glück!

this will only work with the younger generation.
So games niche is perfect fit, but for diet stuff you will have a bad time

It is really not too hard to translate ads or get ads translated into German. Why not just run German ads in Germany?

When I found this wiki list a couple years ago I was quite surprised. Some interesting countries with a really high percentage of english speakers. Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark all over 80%. Pakistan, Nigeria, Philippines, DACH all over 50%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ing_population

Great for finding angles and testing proof of concept before paying one hour translation for a bunch of jobs.

In an attempt to get a little more involved in the forums and give back to the community: If someone needs an ad translated to German, hit me up and I'll do it for free

I am not really sure this is how I would approach even countries like Germany or Netherlands or Nordics or Switzerland (which tend to have higher English speaking populations than other countries like France or Italy).

But hey, if it works for you, that is all that matters.

However, just keep in mind ... the objective in this game is not to get high CTRs. The objective in this game is to get high profits.

If I am paying for an impression or a click, I want to make sure that I do EVERYTHING I CAN to get as high a return on that spend as possible.

Furthermore, if a competitor is paying the same amount as me for that impression or click, I want to make sure that I DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO MAKE SURE that the conversions and as the price per conversion I get from that impression or click is higher than my competitor.

In fact, I want to go even further than that.

I want to make sure that I DO EVERYTHING I CAN to pay lower than any of my competitors for the same impression or click AND still get higher conversions and price per conversion from that impression or click than my competitor.

It is war.

Once again, if running English ads in Germany or running German ads in England works for you, by all means, you should go ahead and do so. But to me, that would be like bringing a pocketknife to a gunfight.

2 years ago i was running 10k daily on germany on fb ads. Im german myself and have to say forget to advertise anything where theyhave to grab their credit card - germans wont. Its also way harder to get germans to do something or sign up.

There is a famous german wording saying "Wo ist der Haken?" means like where is the scam, a bit softer.

You deal with people, who are very suspicious - when you advertise simple stuff you should be fine

This isn't a test to me. Please prove that the same English ad is going to outperform or even come close to the same German ad in Germany. Not gonna happen.

What I see over and over again in Germany (and other geos for that matter) is pubs and advertisers trying to get by with no or bad translations (aka google translate). Do they get a few sales here and there even on the crappiest landing pages? They sure do. Are they crushing it? You take a guess.

To me this is sloppy work, and sloppy work isn't sustainable.

if you took away the english description.. the title "candy crush" and big coloured image of jelly beans is click tastic on it's own.

autoscout24 and a boring pic of cars..well no wonder it's low CTR

test a text ad vs translated version would probably be more conclusive...

Agreed, but with a boring image + text in EN getting a CPI of below $2 ain't bad for a pocketknife, no? Imaging what you could do with a Bazooka? :-)
