My 3rd attempt (after spending $4k), sticking to just app install this time.

Hi all,

Read up on several guides like The Mobile Cookbook by caurmen and Zeno's entry level guide. Many thanks to you two awesome guys. Picked up great stuff like using CPVLab to re-route ads pending approvals straight to the offer page, and the budget limits I should set for my testing.

Blew the dust off my 1yr old CPVLab installation, opened up my 3rd FB ad account (banned twice), signed up with 2 new networks and had chat with my AMs on the best offers to start with.

Payout: USD$0.25
GEO: Brazil
Budget: $15 per ad set ( with only 1 ad inside)

Here's my results after leaving the campaigns on overnight.

I set all 5 ad-sets to

- 18-25 males only
- restrict to android smartphones only
- wifi only
- mobile newsfeed only
- direct link to Google Play offer page (via my CPVLab)
- bids set to "Optimize for Clicks" at $0.50-$0.60

Total spend: $44.23
Total Rev: $0.72

Had just 3 conversions, all using the following image. 2 converts via the "general" audience stated above, and another variant with interests in Harvey Davidonson...Suzuki...Ducati..Yamaha Motor...motorcycle racing.

This one was aimed at Clash of Clans players. Was suprised this one didn't convert.

Spent the whole morning re-reading the guides and some follow-ons.

Here are my thoughts. Please shoot me.

1) Going to cull the ads which did not convert at all. Or are they just sucky? I have to admit I'm not good with creatives...took me a while to do 8 of these up!

2) Going to stick to testing just wifi only instead of mobile vs wifi to control ad spending. I am thinking most folks in Brazil won't enjoy good reception.

3) Upload 4 more new images to test, each with a totally different angle I got while reading reviews and testing out the app myself, and prep another 4 more.

4) Lower my budget to $5 per ad set.

5) Going slow with the img uploads. My last ban occurred when 3 ads got disapproved all at once (after running a previous ad using the same img for 5 DAYS... ) and it triggered a manual review. Banned me because I was banned before due to me forgetting to update my expired credit card lol.

6) My AM told me this offer is doing great on in Brazil, but I find it hard to track since it's on the opposite timezone from mine. Went to App Annie and found it's ranking well on 3 countries within my time zone. Should I switch GEOs?

7) All ads using Portuguese using Google Translate. I'm aware there's a Brazilian Portuguese, but I figure it won't make sense for me to hire a Brazilian on Fiverr at this stage. Am I right?

8) Going to try out 2 other age group blocks (26-30, 31-35). That's approximately 15 new ad sets with $75 total budget. Sounds sensible?

Questions:

I have tested placing FB's conversion pixels on both of my affiliate networks. Both are using the CAKE platform. I have copied seperate conversion pixels on both networks "Testing & Tracking" section for the offer. Conversions occurred on both affiliate networks but FB still didn't register those conversions. Is there anyway to correct this? Or is app installs un-trackable by FB because it's javascript based?

Read on FBQueens' thread that it may not be possible...if anyone knows how to get this working please share! Getting FB to optimize their audience selection based on their own conversion pixels will be so much better...

Just to be sure: you use the PowerEditor in Chrome and target Android only?

(i.e. you don't send traffic to iPhone users).

Yep, I have been doing that for all ad sets. Using PowerEditor in Chrome as well.

My 2 cents:

- You're in a hyper competitive niche
- You need insanely good looking creatives

Here are 3 samples that are working currently ....those ads are PIECES OF ART

Oh gosh.

Don't think I can even get those kind of quality at $5.

If this is hyper-competitive...do you reckon I continue with this offer? My AM recommended me this, and I'm not sure if other offers won't be competitive as well.

check out the dropbox link ...if you know PSD, you might be able to play with smth similar

Yeah i guess I have to seriously up my ante. Thanks for those examples!

How about my budgeting and testing in a new GEO? Or should I just focus on what my AM recommends?

04-23-2015 11:38 AM #8 franco12 (Member)

Sure.

I can't comment on the GEO/AM.

Hmm - I'd definitely, definitely test either a new geo, a new angle or a new offer after seeing those results.

It's good news that you got some conversions, but pushing that lot into profitability is going to be a huge uphill battle.

Why did you restrict to wifi, btw? Usually (not always, but usually) wifi will convert worse than carrier traffic. I'd maybe give the offer another go with carrier traffic - particularly in BR.

Yeah I'll give this another shot at other GEOs concurrently.

I'll look at other offers too. I think the payout is very low when I started...but I went ahead when my AM said people are making a killing with it.

Update:

Some stats from my next 4 ads started coming in.

I have 4 new conversions registered, 3 from Ad8 and 1 from Ad5. Same demo as mentioned above.

Ad8
Spent: $1.16
Revenue: $0.75
ROI: -35%

Ad5
Spent: $0.66
Revenue: $0.25
ROI: -62%

Tiny figures...but at least they are better than yesterday's for now.

Another interesting bit. Most of my first batch of ads were so bad I have people mocking it in the comments LOL. Maybe it's the age group, not sure on that. But i'll test on the older groups.

For your laughs...and feedback too!

Update w/ full data for 2nd day.

My next batch of ads did much better. Two ads stood out.

Ad5
FB CTR: 2.618%
FB CPC: $0.04
CPVLabs registered clicks: 95
Conversions: 9

Ad spend: $3.97
Revenue: $1.82
ROI: -54%

Ad8
FB CTR: 5.199%
FB CPC: $0.02
CPVLabs registered clicks: 119
Conversions: 10

Ad spend: #3.88
Revenue: $2.29
ROI: -41%

Compared to my abysmal results for the first 4 ads, I'm starting to feel abit of adrenaline LOL.

Had re-read @caurmen's statistics significance, and I'm thinking of culling ad 5, but the numbers kind of telling me to drive more traffic first, considering both ads brought in almost the same number of conversions.

Here's my FB stats, and the statistic confidence numbers I got from using http://splittester.com/ & http://www.abtester.com/calculator/

To-do:

1) I'll push ad5 & ad8 to at least 10k impressions before I decide to which one to cut.

2) I'll make image variants for ad5 & ad8 to start split-testing, before testing other age groups/carrier traffic.

3) I'll test other age grps for the other ads + test on carrier traffic, see if they do better before deciding to cut.

4) Churn out more ads.

P.S. Franco, how did you post those ad pics like you did in your post? lol I'm asking a noob qns.

04-27-2015 02:32 PM #13 johndeng (Member)

Well, small mishap happened since the previous post.

Those stats were wrong. The number of conversions were correct, just that the payout dropped to $0.15 due to the advertiser pulling out of that geo. No notice from the network and my AM was stumped too. what a bugger. Just when the ROI numbers were improving.

So started out at Indonesia, somewhere closer to home in SG.

Ran 16 ad sets, based around 8 pics used in Brazil and split into carrier & wifi traffic.

Funny thing is...the CPCs were cheaper, but the conversion rates were abysmal.

Spent a total of USD$64, only got 7 conversions in total for a revenue of only USD$1.80, with only Img7 and Img8 converting. Not going to post the ROI numbers...no point.

Actionables:

So, tml i'm going to start again, this time testing Img 7 & Img 8 with the following new variables:
1) older age group, 26-35, across both male & female

2) test the previous ad sets to a female audience, same age group of 18-25

3) go fiverr and spend about $40 to come up with PRO level banners. Does it make sense for me to invest this amount at this stage?

4) lower the budget for each ad set to $3. With CPCs this low, I can get at least 2000 views to make a decision.

Will appreciate any thoughts or advice!!

Just did my numbers last night and chat further with my AM.

I think I'll have to ditch this offer. The payout, along with my AM's best conversion rates with FB, can't allow me to profit at all in the first place.

Here are my overall stats thus far.

BR
Spent: $70.51
Conversions: 25
Revenue: $5.45
Profit: -$65.06
ROI: -92%

ID
Spent: $82.70
Conversions: 9
Revenue: $2.28
Profit: -$80.42
ROI: -97.2%

Here are my ad performance for BR

And here are the figures I did, and realized there's no way to profit.

payout: $0.28
actual cpc: $0.16 (Taking cost figures from FB, against the actual number of clicks recorded by my CPVLabs)
scenario clicks to landing page 1000
cost : $162.17 (1000 * 0.16)
best conversion rate: 0.03 (Figures given by my AM)
revenue: $8.40

$8.40 revenue for $162.17 spent. There's no way to profit, or is my figures wrong or my actual CPCs are still too high?

I also spoke further with my AM, and he mentioned that some of the traffic may have been from fan pages which already has lots of likes, or an authority website covering apps. These specifically don't have to spend much ad $$ to drive traffic to these offers.

$150 lesson learned....NEED TO ASK AM if the offer he recommends is profitable via ad spend only.

Can anyone, @Zeno, @caurmen, @franco12 commend on this? There's no much point in throwing money into this offer right? Or I just have to massively level up my game to hit actual $0.01 CPC ?

As an noob/intermediate with FB I have always struggled with these offers to make them work... I posted on STM about it as well and nobody really got back to me as to how people are making it work. The maths is difficult... http://adcalc.net/ (you would need a great conversion rate)
Why not go for something with a higher payout? This may seem counter intuitive to a limited budget but FB is different in terms of it's ability to target compared to other traffic sources.
There are several apps that I know would work with those sort of CPC's (assuming you have done your research well and are targeting correctly).

Just my .02 cents.
