First Mobile Campaign!

I've yet to make a profit to "shout home about" through AM but I'm pretty determined to make it happen! Any feedback is welcomed

Traffic source: Decisive
Vertical: Apps
Offer(s): Music Streaming App $0.60 CPA
Geo: HK

Budget: $8 day per campaign
Bid: Between $0.01 and $0.04 CPC

Angles: Currently just have one angle as I'm following along the mobile cookbook appetiser: "Bored of your music collection? Install Guvera!"

Campaign structure: Following along with the mobile cookbook appetiser.

Banners: Click image for larger version.

Size:	68.8 KB
ID:	6484

Landing pages: None currently set up as of yet as I'm just starting and would like to see a conversion first. Is this sensible?

Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to get in touch with me on skype: laurence.stanley if you want to chat! I will be updating this daily and plan on making learning a lot, or earning a lot. Ideally both Thanks for everyones help so far on various threads. I've learnt a lot so far here!

I'm going to wait until each campaign has $15 spend, according to the guide before I make any cuts.

Hey, that looks like a good start.

Banners need to be tested of course but they look good to me.

See if you get any conversions direct linked to prove the offer is solid , later you can test a lander and try to increase the CR.

I used to live in HK and suggest to (1) go funkier in your copy and (2) mix English + Cantonese

Attached a sample of my FB friends and how they post

Thanks for the comments so far!

I am going to try another angle that a friend has suggested. I will add more banners for that later on today.

I will also try your idea franco12 I will have to rely on Google Translate. Will update you with any progress

So far no conversions but have only spent $6 overall

04-22-2015 05:41 PM #5 laurencestanley (Member)

Update: Still no conversions and spend is around $8 in total. My AM tells me that half of my traffic is coming from US (for a HK only deal!!!). All my target locations are set to HK in Decisive so I'm not sure what's going on. I've sent a support email to Decisive about this.

Update 2: Decisive say that all traffic is coming from HK whilst my AM says that around 40% is coming from US. Not sure what to do =[

Does it show the same ratio of us / hk traffic in your tracker?

You could also slip in a geo redirect in there and send us to another similar offer

04-22-2015 07:45 PM #7 laurencestanley (Member)

Thanks for the comment delirious. I am using Decisive as a tracker, as per the appetiser guide (did I understand this correctly or should I use a 3rd party tracker?).

Good idea with regards to redirect, I will try that if I can't fix it

04-22-2015 08:30 PM #8 delirious (Member)

Ideally better to sort it if your buying HK you should get HK.

Ive not got around to following the cookbook yet but as a start i guess decisive is a good option, personally I use Adsbridge and Voluum. I suppose you need to send some SS to your AM showing your decisive traffic or ask if they can provide you with some evidence from their backend stats to take to decisive.

04-22-2015 08:33 PM #9 laurencestanley (Member)

Thanks delirious. I've got screenshots from Decisive showing 100% HK traffic and sent it to my AM. I've also got screenshots from my AM showing 40% US traffic and sent it to decisive. I hope somebody at Decisive figures out what's going wrong

Great post laurencestanley,

I'm following this case study. I am too looking to get started with a Mobile Campaign. Trying to follow the cookbook as well. Good luck to you bro.

Good to see you launch your 1st mobile campaign Laurence! Keep us posted on the issue with the traffic source.

I have this URL in my Info > Link box in Decisive. I have heard about sub id 1 being misunderstood with CAKE but I am fairly new to all of this! Does my URL look like it's set up wrong?:

http://oamtrk.com/?a=202012&c=6555&s1=guveranewmusichk&s2={{{bidhash }}}

Edit: Thanks for the kind words above

04-22-2015 09:21 PM #13 ninjaspeed (Member)

For the s1 query string variable is that your campaign name? That URL looks correct to me.

Ex. mine is:
http://f5mtrack.com/?a=122695&c=40094&s1=PSafeBrazilBatteryMobileSite& s2={{{bidhash}}}

For your offer make sure you include your Postback URL "http://win.crwd.io/convert/#s2#" (I'm using F5Media)

04-23-2015 06:16 AM #14 laurencestanley (Member)

The s1 query string is my campaign name, yes. Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if my URL was incorrect that it might explain the incorrect Geos being sent to my campaign

04-23-2015 03:48 PM #15 laurencestanley (Member)

Update: I have paused my campaigns to learn/set up 3rd party tracking. I will hopefully be able to blacklist any sources of non HK traffic with this. My total spend so far is around $16 and I have yet to see a conversion.

Laurence, if you're still having issues setting up your 3rd party tracker check out these 2 threads:

http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...-Read-This-Now
http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ll-Video-Guide

I spent the last hour going through both posts and it's awesome! Looks like I can't do it with my current campaigns so I'll try it out on a test campaign.

04-25-2015 06:37 AM #17 laurencestanley (Member)

Thanks ninja! I read/watched those guides as many times as it took me to understand them!

Another update: I've signed up to HideMyAss so I can test my direct links/landers in different goes. I've also now got Everything set up in Voluum. Time to make more campaigns

I can see why a lot of people give up as there have already been A LOT of hurdles but I'm determined to get in to the green and make something of this

04-25-2015 10:07 AM #18 stitch (Member)

Good to see you got tracking set up.

I'd suggest getting your creatives translated - while English may convert (or may not), it's likely that you'll get a noticeably better response to the local language. This is from both my limited experience and what I've gleaned from others. Something to test, anyway... anyone can say anything but the only thing that matters is what the data tells you.
While you're getting rolling you want to be doing everything you can to outwork your competition: some of them will have been lazy and not had their shit translated... you can spend $5 on OHT/Fiverr and already be ahead of them.

Look forward to following your progress.

04-25-2015 10:09 AM #19 laurencestanley (Member)

Thanks for the tips regarding translation. I will give it a go I have family members who can translate French and German so that might help with other campaigns!

04-27-2015 07:50 PM #20 laurencestanley (Member)

Update:

I have set up another mobile utility campaign. Currently waiting for Decisive to approve my ads as last were rejected for mimicking phone alerts (oops!). Having still only got traffic to one campaign, I am still wanting to get some experience with traffic before adding landing pages and tracking, although I have read up on both.

What I need to do next:
- Get ads approved on decisive for campaign #2
- Get some traffic coming in for campaign #2
- Sign up to whatrunswhere
- Set up tracking and landers for campaign #2
- Set up campaign #3!!!

Nice work Laurence! I currently do my translation using Google Translate but will probably go down the route of hiring people to translate down the line. I've heard of Fiverr but what is OHT?

04-30-2015 07:51 AM #22 laurencestanley (Member)

I think OHT stands for https://www.onehourtranslation.com/ I've not used them yet myself

04-30-2015 08:05 AM #23 stitch (Member)

Correct. They're aptly named and usually it doesn't cost me more than $7-8 for a campaign translated to a single language

04-30-2015 02:03 PM #24 laurencestanley (Member)

Update: A lot has changed in 3 days! I am now experimenting with a new traffic source, Go2Mobi.

I submitted a new utility offer campaign last night but woke up to find it was rejected due to countries outside of the target geos being redirected to adult dating. I solved this with my own redirect in Voluum (I was proud of myself for thinking of that!). This campaign is now awaiting aproval.

Just 5 minutes ago I have submitted another campaign which is awaiting approval. Both campaigns are Android utility apps with payouts under $0.40.

I am really enjoying chatting to you all on STM / skype (laurence.stanley). The last week has been an IMMENSE learning curve and I've loved every minute of it. Thanks STM!

How you getting on with this campaign? Did you get them approved?

It was a little while ago, but I'm pretty sure it got approved after I had sorted out the redirects myself in Voluum Nice to see somebody else from the NW around btw

Hey guys,

I noticed my STM subscription renewed for the first month the other day. The day I joined STM, I started in AM so I thought I owed you guys an update. In fact, I owe myself an update too!

It has been a motivation roller coaster.

You may have noticed my posting patterns have been fairly sporadic. Sometimes posting lots every day. Sometimes not posting for a week. Learn from my mistakes and STAY ACTIVE on forums, Skype etc as it is an incredibly valuable learning source which I have neglected at times when I think I’m winning/loosing too much to care.

In a month of AM so far:

- Spent ~100 hours learning/practising
- Spent ~$400 on campaigns (thrown a lot of it down the toilet… Read the fucking manuals guys)
- Earned ~$10 through ~30 conversions
- Joined a mastermind group
- Had ups
- Had downs

The biggest lessons I have learned so far:

TEAM UP!
I ran a joint campaign with SSMarketers from STM, we ran the same offer in different geos and it was by far the most successful campaign I’ve ran so far. It was the first time I’ve been at around -50% ROI. I’ve recently joined a mastermind group also and look forward to seeing where this takes us.

STAY AWAY FROM BIG GEOS!
Everyone has told me this tonnes of times and I must have ignored them, thinking I can run traffic in big geos and hit a lucky pot of gold. It will not happen unless you have big bank. I chose some really small geos for my latest campaigns and I saw an INSTANT INCREASE IN CONVERSIONS.

KEEP LEARNING!
When my campaigns have been doing badly, I have become unmotivated and immediately ditch the campaign to start another. Somehow hoping that the next will make me rich. How can you expect that your next campaign will be any better than the last if you do not learn some shit in-between?

Long term goal:
I plan to earn enough through AM to pay for tickets/flights etc to an STM/AM event in 11 months (1 year after starting in AM)

I appreciate there is a lack of stats/screenshots in here but I hope someone can still learn from my journey so far.

Thanks for all your help and support so far

Laurence

Nice work Laurence! AM isn't easy, and what you've accomplished so far has taken a lot of effort. It's good that you're recording your accomplishments. When the lows strike it's good to be able to look back and see the forward progress you've made. It can help to push you out of the rut.

This is something I really struggled with at first. It's probably the same with a lot of beginners. So it's worth highlighting that YOU SHOULD NOT jump between campaigns WITHOUT LEARNING anything. Seriously. Even the biggest bomb of a campaign has something to teach.

05-20-2015 12:33 PM #29 caurmen (Administrator)

Great points.

If you're starting to get down, it can be worth making a list of things you've learned, too - or just make a list whilst you're working. When you feel like you're getting nowhere, you can look at the massive list and see all the progress you've made.

05-25-2015 10:11 AM #30 aushustler87 (AMC Alumnus)

Hang in there mate, you're doing EXACTLY what you need to do to become a mobile master, this isn't an easy path and there's always gonna be really crap times but there'll also be plenty of amazing times, if you can tolerate the crap times you'll be rewarded massively!!

Something that always helps lift my spirits when i've had a bomb campaign or im doubting my future in AM is to look back over the follow along's of the super affiliate beasts back when they first started, cause you can see that they've been through the exact same shit that we're going through, so that means we're surely on the right path.
