Hey guys, I'm Luis from Texas. I first heard about making money online when I was 12 when I googled "how does tom from myspace make money?". When I got the answer, I thought "No wonder there are so many ads on there!". It took me years to discover the affiliate part of the business.
I am just glad that I know of the industry now, and really like the perks for being an affiliate marketing. I see that many people share the same goals. (traveling, being free!) Currently, I am a college sophomore majoring in marketing, and I've made a decision to invest in data for AM, instead of being 40K+ in debt and working in a dead-end job.
I know the journey will be tough, but the rewards and perks makes it all worth it. There is nothing like Affiliate marketing and I'm excited to take action.
Current Budget: $2,000 (Semester ends in May 10, and I will save up more for testing)
I decided to follow the Mobile Cookbook guide to get me started.
So this is my second time launching this campaign, since it's still one of the top offer for my network. I told my self I would push to see results.
Traffic Source: Decisive
Offer: Psafe (Antivirus/App Install)
Payout: $0.29
Geo: Brazil

I've decided to do a 3 angles and 3 banners for each. Unfortunately, two of the banners have been rejected because decisive said they were misleading. I did some spying on WhatRunsWhere and found that the most used angle was "Have a virus? Click to clean now!". I got some banners from there and tweak them, but I think I need to focus on making most of them from scratch.
Results for today so far:
Spend for the day: $3.47
Revenue: $0.29
Net profit/loss: -$3.18
ROI: -91.64%

I got a conversion! The first time I got one, I was so excited and made the important decision to treat this like a business and go hard on it.
Targeting Samsung:
I also have been running Psafe about a week ago, only that time I was targeting Samsung. And I had 7 conversions with them, and I even got 1 conversion today. (total of 2 for the day)

Banners:
(The two that I circled are the ones working, and funny enough I got the ideas from this forum)
I learn from reading Dr Ngo's blog that targeting a specific type of people makes them feel special. (In this case samsung users). It seems to be going well there considering that the CPA is lower than my other campaigns, but I am not receiving enough traffic. In fact, it received no clicks for MOBILE/SITE for the day, and bids were around 3,250. I also paused WIFI/SITE and WIFI/APP because they were losing money fast and no conversions.
Psafe Samsung Target:
Total Spend: $19.38
Revenue: $2.00
Net profit/loss: -$17.38
ROI: -89.68%
Current Goal: Get -50% ROI for all campaigns; Network with awesome people! (PM me to be mobile buddies
)
Action Plan:
First thing: I'd definitely try running another offer as well as PSafe fairly soon. I'm definitely not saying give up on PSafe, but it was smashed pretty hard last year and you may find other offers convert better.
Volume on your Samsung campaign: are you running Smart CPM? If so, first thing to do is to increase your CPA goal. If that doesn't work and you're still not getting enough volume, create a new campaign bidding regular CPM and test there - don't be afraid to test higher bids, although do keep a very close eye on your placements if you're doing that.
Thanks caurmen.
I created a new campaign for regular CPM, and it seems to still get low traffic for mobile/site. However, for mobile/app I won %46 of the bids and only got 1 conversion spending $4.97. I check the app that was getting the most spend was Grindr, which is responsible for most of my conversions in the same offer.
As for the main offer after getting 5 conversion for Psafe WIFI/APP, its pretty hard to tell what's working.

Most of the banners have 1 conversion, and most of the spend goes to Grindr. (and also 3 conversions.) I also saw grindr in "STM Decisive Blacklist", so I can see why it may not be a good idea to keep running there.
Anyways, I have decided to follow your advice and run another offer. It has a very low payout, but right now I need to focus on learning more rather than making money. Like college, you spend money to learn and then you make money after you learn.
Offer: Mico (Payout $0.16)
Geo: Canada
Total Spend: $0.89
Revenue: $0
Net profit/loss: -$0.89
ROI: -100%

Next Step:
Spend more time watching and blacklisting spots for campaigns.
Questions
1. How many campaigns do you guys recommend a newbie run at one time?
2. Should I try running landing pages with app install offers?
3. When going through blogs and such I kept reading about focus on a vertical, would that mean focus on a specific app install(Antivirus) or app installs in general.
Update!
So Mico has been paused by the owner, so I paused it as well with not much data.
As for Psafe, I did a fair amount of conversions, but the CPA is pretty high.

Spend: 40.09
Revenue: 6.96
Profit: -33.13 (-82.64% ROI)
I noticed that most of the conversions and spend are from two gay chat apps. (Scruff and Grindr) Perhaps a special target to them can work really well.
I would take the targets that are spending the most money and put them into another campaign, that way they aren't eating all of your budget so you can get data from more pubs..
Alright, so it's fair to say that I have been slacking and I need to step my game up. The last 2 weeks I've spend driving (working) and finishing up projects for school.
