WOWSERS! App Downloads To Exceed 235bn This Year As Chinese Market Continues To Surge
App Downloads To Exceed 235 Billion This Year As Chinese Market Continues To Surge
from http://www.juniperresearch.com/press...35bn-this-year
5 of 7 Leading App Stores Based in China
A new report from Juniper Research has found that the number of apps downloaded to mobile handsets and tablets is expected to rise by nearly 28% this year to over 235 billion.
The report, ‘Apps & App Stores: Market Trends & Forecasts 2015-2019’ argues that the recent surge in app downloads is in large part attributable to phenomenal growth in the Chinese market, which last year accounted for nearly 60% of downloads worldwide.
The Great Firewall of China
According to the report, local storefronts have benefitted from Google’s near exclusion from the Chinese marketplace, with access to Google’s Play store severely restricted by the GFoC (Great Firewall of China). As a result, Baidu’s app store – which is effectively integrated into the company’s search engine – has now eclipsed Apple’s App Store to become the second-largest storefront in terms of download volumes. Furthermore, China now accounts for 5 of the leading 7 app stores by that metric.
However, the report found that China still lags behind both the US and Japan in terms of app revenues, with revenues per download nearly 9 times higher in the US and more than 14 times higher in Japan. Meanwhile, it observed that the continuing trend away from the PPD (Pay Per Download) model now saw that monetisation option accounting for just 12% of all app revenues.
Games Predominate, But Multimedia Bundles Prosper
The report argued that although Games is the most mature and lucrative app sector, there is significant scope for growth in both developed and developing markets, highlighting strong migration from handheld game consoles and continued social gaming growth.
Meanwhile, it claimed that adoption and monetisation of multimedia apps is likely to be further fuelled as network operators bundle multimedia applications with customer subscriptions. As report author Dr Windsor Holden observed, “Broadcasters are now offering distinct and bolt-on mobile packages, a trend which will gain further impetus as customers migrate to larger screen phablet devices”.

I don’t believe 99% of what I read.
So let’s see if this monster number is intuitively possible:
According to statista.com, there are 380 Million smartphone users in China + 330 Million tablet users = around 700 Million mobile devices.
For the sake of simplicity, let’s say take 700 Million users (though there’s certainly 25%+ overlapping).
235 Billion / 700 Million = around 400 downloads per user in 2014
Since the reports is about the current year that means each user downloads around 1 app a day.
Conclusion: I think the number is totally exaggerated.

It is crazy high, sure.
But you need to do some math reversal first.
Rise of 28% to 235 billion this year.
So, 235/1.28 = 183.6 billion last year.
It is estimated that ~60% of that was from China.
0.6 * 183.6 = ~110 billion.
I Google'd devices in China and Wikipedia says 1,276,660,000 from October 2014. Given the prevalence of mobile devices in Asia I'd say that 700 million in a population of 1400 million, in China of all places, is an underestimate. (mobile device penetration in at least 7 large Asian geos, not including China, is over 100%, and China makes a huge % of the devices!)
So, from that I get 110/1.277 = 86.1 or about a download every 4 days, or 1-2x per week. A lot of younger people would do this with gaming apps alone.
