promote as a merchant or become an affiliate for the merchant?

Hi all,
I personally know someone who wholesales physical products and wants me to promote his products. At the moment he sells to retailers only but he is looking to build a small ecommerce website shortly. He knows very little about websites and online marketing etc.

My questions are:
1) what are the pros and cons of the following 2 approaches:
---charge him a monthly retainer and promote his products as a merchant
---become an affiliate and charge him only after I make sales

2) if that person likes the idea of affiliate better, what tracking system would you recommend?

any help much appreciated!

3) Charge him an affiliate consulting fee and setup the affiliate program for him + take a percentage of what affiliates make

Depends on how complex you want to go. You could always go with something like hasoffers or whatever if you just wanted to start pretty cheap.
