Would someone tell me if the price information for the Maxmind GeoIP Organization Database is out of date? When I clicked on the link in the STM Mobile Tracker installation guide it took me to a page for GeoIP2 ISP Database. Is this the latest version or am I missing something? If this is what is needed it is $100 not $25 . I just wanted to point this out in case it was missed. I want to be sure to buy the right thing because I would like to start testing this week.
Thanks in advance for the help
James
As of November they started charging, which is awful, considering I like free things. They have both subscription and per query based products, but I also wasn't sure how they differed, so I contacted them and here is what they wrote me in direct reply to your question, as well as my own.
Answer to your question:
Paul: The data in the GeoIP Legacy Organization database was combined with the GeoIP Legacy ISP database and the GeoLite ASN database when we created the GeoIP2 ISP database, so that one license and database includes data from all three.
Paul: And also includes access to the separate GeoIP Legacy database formats as well.
Paul: And, yes, the pricing moved up to $100 for the one-time license fee at the same time.
Regarding keeping it free, for others who might like to know, here you go:
Me: I just am looking for simple city information in my landing pages. Which service should i buy? GeoIP2 Databases? Or GeoIP2 Precision Services ?
Paul: You can purchase queries for our GeoIP2 Precision City web service
https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip2-pr...n-city-service
You can then use them with the GeoIP Legacy JavaScript API, which is probably very similar to what you were using previously.
http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/legacy/javascript/
Me: ok so will it be as simple as putting the code into the html like i used to? or do i have to install something?
Paul: If you were using our old free JavaScript endpoint, you can use the current GeoIP Legacy JavaScript endpoint by purchasing queries and replacing the old endpoint URL with the current one
Me: ok so there is no true free way to use the service anymore right? the geolite version?
Paul: You're still welcome to use the free GeoLite database, yes, but all of the web services are paid-only at this point.
