Bid doesn't mean you will be paying that much.

It means how much are u MAX prepared to pay per click.

But if your ad is good (high CTR) you will end paying much less.

Bid $1, like $0.10 CPC

Your ad CTR is huge factor in click price. Bigger your CTR, lower CPC as you are basically paying in CPM terms.

CPC to start with, test your landing page and optimize. But if you are running a mobile offer like app install, it will be hard to be profitable just on CPC since FB is expensive. Or if you start with CPM, create many many different ads. Pause ads with low CTR, and keep running campaign. If you have high CTR on Facebook, your CPC will drop.

You complaining about high FB prices?

Try LinkedIn with CPC starting at $2.00. Or AdWords with a competitive keyword ... at $5, 10, 15 ....45!

My personal favorite trick on FB:

If you set your maximum bid for clicks (CPC) manually on Facebook, start …HIGH!

For example, if the suggested bid is $0.32-$0.76, start bidding 10% above the upper range.
In this case set your bid at $0.84 ($0.76 + 10%).
Why? Chances are that you’re ad will be served more often than others who are bidding lower.
Thus, you most likely start with a higher CTR than your competitors, which should lead to lower costs for you in the long term.

I agree with that, it works. Actually when I was doing FB, I was bidding 20% over the suggested bid. Then I was cutting banners really quickly and keeping my high CTR banners always running. It lowered my CPC in the long run...
