Say I drive traffic to a CDN. do I need to use a webhost as well? I don't see any reason I would right?
What reasons do I have to use for example beyondhosting and not just rackspace?

You should probably use Webhosting if your landers or whatever use php to execute some server sided code. A CDN cannot execute PHP.
So if you only host HTML, CSS, javascript, images etc. a CDN should be fine.
Also, you'll need hosting if you want to use a self-hosted tracker like Prosper, the STM Mobile Tracker, or
