I got 99 problems and CLICK LOSS is one
Ok so I don't actually have 99 problems, I've only got 3. I'm hoping you can help us to diagnose some of the issues with our current mobile campaign and provide some suggestions on how to fix them (if they're fixable).
Mastermind with another STM member
Offer: Dr Safety (AV app install, payout $0.27)
Geo: Russia
Click flow: Decisive -> Voluum -> direct link or multiple landing pages -> Appflood affiliate link to Google Play store
Bids: Started at 0.12 CPM, have moved up to $0.22 CPM progressively
Quick summary: Experiencing multiple issues with campaign. Wondered whether it was a config issue so we set up the whole campaign again on different accounts and are still seeing the same issues. Trying to work out the source of the issues and learn from the experience.
PROBLEM 1: Major click loss from traffic to tracking, and from tracking to affiliate network
First time we ran the campaign we lost 25% of clicks (2859 clicks in Decisive, 2164 in Voluum). Second time we lost 35% of clicks (1175 at Decisive, 779 in voluum). The weird thing is, both times site traffic hasn't experienced click loss at all, it's only app traffic that is affected.
Furthermore, only 350 gross clicks (251 unique) have shown up at Appflood across the two campaigns.
Our thoughts:
- Click loss is a part of AM, maybe this is normal?
- Perhaps for app traffic there are a lot of people misclicking our banners, getting dragged away from what they were doing, and quickly switch back away from the browser before it hits the voluum link
- We don't think it's related to LP load times -- we have optimised our landing pages (<6kB for HTML and images), they are hosted on a CDN, users are definitely hitting the cached files, and if it was due to poor loading times we wouldn't expect to see click loss for only one type of traffic.
PROBLEM 2: Virtually no landing page clicks from site traffic
Site traffic CTRs on our landing pages are extremely low compared to app traffic. The first time we ran the campaign, site traffic LP CTR was 1% (from ~1300 visits), while app traffic CTR was 12.8% (~900 visits). For the second campaign, site traffic LP CTR is 0% (180 visits), while app traffic CTR is around 12.2% (650 visits).
Our thoughts:
- Pretty stumped by this one... maybe this offer or our angle simply doesn't work well for site traffic, or the particular placements we've been winning bids on?
PROBLEM 3: Not a single conversion.
Overall there have been over 4000 banner clicks, 200 LP clicks, 375 direct link visits, but no conversions at all.
Our thoughts:
- Our angle is ordinary and probably done to death (fear of hackers/viruses)
- Could be an app that a lot of people have already downloaded
- Could be poor loading time to affiliate network or Google Play store (exacerbated by crappy Russian internet connections)
Actions to take:
- Generate NEW AND IMPROVED angles for banners and landers
- Split test traffic source
- Split test with another AV app install offer
- Launch in another less competitive and saturated geo
- Increase the bid further to see if we get better quality clicks
- Never give up!
What are your thoughts? I've outlined the issues here and our thoughts on them, but I'm hoping some of you can pitch in and provide some ideas or suggestions for what could be wrong, if anything, and how to go about improving from here.
Thanks for reading!

Russia.. Decisive .. check for bot traffic
25% click loss from Decisive to Affiliate network stats happened to me a couple times on Decisive but I took it as still acceptable if I could not find out why and stop it..
From my experience I easily spent around $5 for one conversion when testing some new GEO or offer on Decisive without any optimization done (even for low payout apps) .. Idk the offer itself, have you asked your AM the usual questions and if it's not run to death already?
You already concluded the right thing, all you have to do is keep going keep going and keep going
If you focus and do this and similar offers for Russia on Decisive, you will soon see all the patterns and know this particular combination better than anyone else here

I remember reading over Caurmen's bot case study but a lot of it went over my head, looks like it's time to revisit it.
Zeno suggested that I audit the numbers of Decisive clicks and
Voluum visits on a per app basis. See below for the results:
I'm not exactly sure what to make of this. Remember that we're not experiencing the same issue for site traffic, which makes me think it isn't about connectivity / loading times. Almost every single app was dropping clicks at well over 50%. A handful didn't drop any clicks. Blacklisting all of the apps that drop clicks above 50% is going to choke off all of our traffic. Any suggestions?
Before launch, my AM sent me data showing that this offer is converting at 20-25% in Russia. Maybe the data was bogus, maybe our sales funnel sucks. Our AM ignores most of the messages we send her on Skype so she's not much help.
On the topic of conversions, one popped up last night right before we paused the campaign. So it seems as though there is no config issue in terms of conversions being recorded either.

Oh shi- haha that's some terrible data.
I would forward this to Decisive and avoid RU App traffic for now. Who knows why it's happening - odd if it's just app traffic.

You were right when you noted that app users are likely mis-clicking your banners and accounting for a great deal of click loss.
Although it does seem to be quite high. Russia is a tricky geo, so it might have a lot to do with your click loss as well.
Honestly though, so many clicks to the offer and no conversions seems to raise some red flags. Something isn't right there.
If you can, I'd split test a different offer and if possible, a different network as well. I'd also suggest testing other geos to see if the click loss issue is just as bad, and perhaps if the CVR is any better.

this article says that 50% of clicks are accidental..

PROBLEM 4: Out of the 224 visits to Voluum from site traffic, 123 were outside Russia so were sent directly to the Google Play store (in line with our Voluum redirect rules). Yet Decisive is saying all of the traffic they sent was from Russian users.

This will happen. On some networks and geos more than others, but will happen regardless.
My best advice is to set up adequate redirect rules on your end to try and convert those rogue visitors. You can find matching offers and set up landers yourself (best option, IMO) or just redirect it all to a place like YTZ and let them handle it.
