Mobile | Drinking From The Firehose - goal $100/day & Beyond!

Here is my shinny new mobile case study as promised on my success story thread seen here.

For this case study i will be leaning on a few of my fellow STM members who are helping me shorten the learning curve.

I will be using ExoClick and Decisive for traffic sources.

I will be using a large pool of networks to pull offers from as well.

Tracking will be done with Voluum. For the price and that it includes hosting it seems like a great setup. I understand the concern about data and self hosting but I think for now things will be ok.

So leading up to this i have spent a few hundred on both traffic sources.

This allowed me to see how
- approvals worked
- bidding works ( I ran the same camp on exo but used the 3 different bidding types to see how the traffic varied )
- Gave me the chance to run through getting Voluum up and running, custom domain, landing page setup, all tracking data is passing and conversion posts back pixels.

I then started doing a little spying to see what i saw running and started chatting up my AMs. This is probably not the best time to be doing this with everyone heading out west to ASW but it has not be a problem yet.

Test Campaign 1 Setup - Day 1

Traffic: ExoClick Adult
Location: South Africa
CPA: $2.80

10 300 x 100 Banners
1 LP
1 Offer from 1 Network

Now I normally would like to use at least 3 LPs, 3-5 offers (plus multiple LPs from 1 offer if available) and test multiple networks for the same offer. In this case my AM was very strong on this setup.

SO i went ahead and launched and waited. Totally forgot to check it and woke up in the middle of the night, saw it was running and paused it.

To my surprise this morning here is what i saw for yesterday

Impressions: 7,174
CPC $.254
Clicks 27
LP CT 19
Conversions 2

Cost $6.86
Rev. $5.60
Net -$1.26

Not bad!

I have restarted this campaign now as it is later in the day in South Africa so I would think the adult dating would be picking up a bit.

I am also launching another campaign that my AM recommend.

I am trying to develop a system for myself as to remove emotion and thinking from the process of optimization. I have been reading a ton, loved Bigeasy123’s post
http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ght=bigeasy123

Right now i am trying to be patient and let the traffic / data come in.

These are the rules I found on here, i will look around so i credit the right person here (might have been Amy? / vortex )

- If a placement has conversions... if profitable, don't kill it.
- If 1 more conversion would make it profitable, don't kill it.
- If it has a conversion but ROI is still say -75% or lower, just kill it.
- If placement has spent $0.10 without a single click, kill.
- If placements have an average effective CPC of >$0.05, it's very unlikely that they will be profitable so will kill if they have spent a fair chunk

One issue i had was picking a starting bid. Do i go high, low or right around recommendations from the tool?

Hopefully by tomorrow I will have enough data that I can cut placements.

Since exo has 4 carriers listed for South Africa Iam also tempted to take my best ads from this test and break it out into 4 groups/1 for each carrier as well as IOS vs Andriod.

SO love to hear any thoughts, am i beating down the right path?

Well its been quite a while since i updated but that does not mean the work stopped.

Since the start of this thread i have launched somewhere around 50 - 75 campaigns.

Not each campaign was intended to run for a long period of time. Some of them i only setup to see how much traffic came in and how quickly at different bidding types.

I ended up trying a few traffic sources so i really knew which one i wanted to put time into.

I ended up testing out around 6 different ones and spent a few K. The amount of knowledge I got back from that is incredible.

The title of my follow along is drinking from the firehose but it has seemed to be 1 of 2 extreme i get. If i run in a smaller geo PL, AT, CO, CH, … i optimize it down to very little traffic. If it was a larger Geo I was spent before i had any data

I started doing some Mobile Redirects with good luck. So i got my campaign to good profit

The numbers for 1 day look like this,

Clicks 980
Leads 8
Spend 1.20
Earn 2.72
Profit 1.52
ROI 127.3%
CPA .15
CVA .34

These numbers look great but they are missing a few zeros.

So i thought to myself how can I take this up a bit, here is what I did
- Copied the campaign over a few times - 10 to be exact
- Raise the bid on the original camp to pull it ahead of the pack and keep testing
- Put min bids in on the other 9
- I am also sharing a black list between all 10 so I don’t need to test a placement on each one.
- I also moved my top 5 placements into a winners camp.

A day of running like that looked like this for the same campaign

Clicks 6102
Leads 41
Spend 7.27
Earn 13.80
Profit 6.53
ROI 89.4%

So I was able to increase it here but again not really the burst of traffic i had hope for.

I have tried running some larger geo’s and my god did BR kick my ass up and down the street. That was the traffic i was looking for but iam going to need a budget to break that one.

On another traffic source i have another campaign looking good.
Its been running for a few days and looks like this on 3/1

Clicks 14,071
Leads 22
Rev 33.66
Spend 19.60
Profit 14.06

This one is starting to look a bit better but according to my traffic source I have the high bid but Iam only getting 7% of the available traffic

It had mentioned changing my frequency cap but I really don’t want to move it up from 3 right now.

Another issue is weird placements coming out of no where and eating budget. I am attempting to get everything lined up for Adult Ads Pro to see if i can get the hurdles to catch these before they each up 2 - 3x payout.

So to get the numbers I want i feel like i either have to go to the larger geos and get beat up for a bit. I also could try taking these camps to other sources for traffic.

The problem with that idea to me is that it will take spend to learn a new source and how far am I really going to take a $10 a day camp when iam after 100 or 1000 a day.

On a separate note I have learned a lot of country codes in a short amount of time. Also how to say download and play in a few languages. Refreshed my photoshop animation skills as well as batch processing.

I have not been able to get the traffic from decisive i was hoping. Still testing a ton. I can launch the same campaign 5 times and see 5 very different results which can be frustrating.

I am going to try and do a better job of updating here more. Both to help out others starting up as well as to keep a record of my progress.

To all of you going to London have a great time, super jelly iam not going.
Travel Safely and thanks for reading!

hey, it seems you need more volume for your campaigns?

What GEOs are you target? Are you stricting the OS to OS versions?

03-03-2015 02:46 PM #7 grassr00ts (Member)

My targeting goes
Country
Browser
OS

I am not able to cut by OS version on this platform

So a little update which should be followed by a daily log.

I have had some ups a downs . I was able to get a pin submit offer up to about $100 a day just in time for the offer to be paused. (Hope it comes back soon)

So i am looking for more offers in the same pin sub area.

Today i took a handful of similar offers and tested them against 15 geos!

This was a short test just to see if any of these had some life in them.

Out of those 7 did not register a lead.

I have 3 in the low -70% ROI

1 of them is -60% ROI

Another 1 is -18% ROI

Finally i have one that has a profit of 39.3% not much as it spent 1.83 to make 2.55

This was done with mobile redirects.

So I took my data and went over to decisive. I setup about 6 Geos that looked promising.

Each is split out of course wifi/Mob App/Site

1 was approved and so far its running at a -50% without optimization.

In total I have about 24 camps in decisive based of the 6 geos. Each has a $50 budget for the day.

At this point iam going to force myself away from the computer for a while to get some data.

Hopefully we have something fun to work with here!

Fascinating stuff grassroots! I'm just starting with Decisive as well, interested to see what I can make it do for me.

All 4 of these were started at the same time, same offer, same url ..... same smart price CPM but my win % for sites are much higher

any insight on this?
