Guys,
I'm a bit panicked here.. A few hours ago I signed up on Rackspace Cloud after reading Zeno's recommendation in the Onboarding zone for using Rackspace Cloud Files CDN.
I didn't select any managed service but I had to enter my credit card details (I guessed it was normal since they have a pay-as-you-go pricing model) and after signing up I had to wait for them to call me in order to verify my account.
I signed up from this page: https://cart.rackspace.com/cloud/sites
Now, all of a sudden I receive an email saying that I've been charged with $150 and I don't even know what I paid for:
Why not give them a call?
Yeah, call them or email the support.
Rackspace can be confusing because sometimes you try sign up for their CDN and end up doing something else.
Ok, servandosilva is right. I contacted support and it looks like I signed up for the wrong type of account. Instead of "cloud servers" I signed up for "cloud sites". Should have been more careful
I'll change the onboarding guides because of this.
Rackpspace really did a terrific job of burying their DNS/CDN offerings beneath their managed server offerings that none of us want.
Time to find a better CDN recommendation! Will probably rejig it to focus on Exceda.
Rackspace has terrific support, from my experience. So I'm sure they will be more than happy to sort out this mixup.
I'm using maxcdn, great support and did not have any issues so far
@zeno I'm also following along The Onboarding Zone getting myself set up and looks like Rackspace costs $50/m now - cannot find the free option.
Cant seem to find the sign up button or really have any clue whats going on at Exceda either.
Suggestions?
Thanks!
I tried Exceda and found it really difficult to set up, support wasn't great either. I've given up on them -- I'm now with maxCDN and can definitely recommend them. Much quicker and easier to set up, and fantastic live chat support.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I will have a look a the setup process for a few of them and then pick one to roll with as the go-to suggestion for people starting out.
Edit: never mind I figured it out!
Check this out, it appears they cover $50 monthly fee for a year:

For anyone thinking about using cloudflare, zeno has a good writeup

I just signed up for Rackspace cloud, it appears $50 only applies if you need servers. If you only need CDN, you only pay for data and storage.
I've talked to Rackspace and they are going down the managed-only route so don't really want people signing up just to use the CDN.
I'm going to rewrite the onboarding guides to use CloudFront, will do with a video, just a bit distracted hehe. Might do today!
I've tried CloudFront but I've had some issues with them not caching HTML files with tokens in the URL. So I just went with Rackspace and everything's good.
How did you get a non-managed account? I couldn't see the option during signup a few weeks back, and when I spoke to support they said the option was no longer available.
I haven't gone through the registration process again but I believe others said you were forced to put in CC details - but unsure of charges.
I'll go do it again now and confirm that it's fine. I hope it is!
I've just registered with the intention of using it only for CDN and DNS services. Will update here if I get charged the $50 fee.
Ok it looks like you can register and use Cloud Files, it's just more convoluted than before. You will need to add CC details to register and get in.
I'll update the onboarding guides or wherever I had these notes so that there's less confusion.
It's fine, they may charge you around a dollar to verify your credit card, but that's about it. The service is pay as you go with no hidden charges.
I even called them and they said that the $50 is only if you need the servers.
Does anyone what would be the better place to point my domain's nameservers to? Cloudflare or Rackspace or NSOne from zeno's tutorial?
I should only place images and .css files on the CDN right?
Thanks
Amazon Cloudfront has been good to me.
