How to hire good full-time web developer?

Hi guys,

Its 2015 and business is A-boomin. Now I'm at a point where I want to hire a full-time web developer (outside the US, not boomin quite that big yet!)

They need to be masters of HTML and Javascript, for desktop/mobile.

Whats the best way to screen for good candidates? What questions should I ask? What countries work best? I've had very good experience with Filipinos and eastern Europeans so far. Of course, Filipinos are cheaper

Hey Brian, i have used a company out of the Phillipines for the last 3 years and they have been great. It's owned by a Canadian with a ton of experience running affiliate programs and 15 years IM experience (so she get's it!)

I talk to her daily on skype so there is little issue with communication and so forth and they really have most of the check boxes you're looking for covered.

Good luck!

I've hired and outsourced a lot, here's my 2c:

- Ukraine has top notch developers, communication is good, they're very smart, but they cost almost as much as US developers. On average I pay $30/hr.
- Filipinos have great work ethic, but most of the work I send there is low-level repetitive tasks, stuff that doesn't require an engineer.
- India is very hit or miss, I've had developers who were just average, and I've had some who delivered excellent work for very little money.

The best bang for you buck will be having a developer sitting right next to you. If the work is project-based, get a local developer, it will save you time, and time is money. If this is an ongoing thing where you need a developer to be available whenever needed, I'd look on Elance. Find a highly rated developer and build a relationship with them.

I agree with _mcr_. Nothing beats someone sitting right next to you and you give them instructions and monitoring their progress. I put up an ad for a designer in kijiji and i got tons of students applying for it. Interviewed a few who agreed at $12/hr. Best is to hire a student out of college. They are desperate and hungry for experience.

I think it's time to make an outsourcing specific forum section. Too much good info going unnoticed

Your wish has been granted, though all I did was bump the forum up one level :P

Depends how advanced are the programming tasks you want to give them.

For simple to intermediate PHP / JS I would go with PH coders. They have great work ethics, good english and are very cheap.

If you want to get involved in bigger projects I've had the best luck with eastern european coders ( odesk ). The only negative thing has been communication since very often their english is not great.
