Follow Along Adivity & Pin Submits to Start - Old PPC Affiliate Diving into Mobile

Hello All, been lurking here for awhile and leveraging general knowledge gained from STM to further my overall inet marketing expertise. I've always believed affiliates to be the best and most innovative online marketers (vs. our corporate brethren who pontificate on theory and piss away million dollar budgets). I run a local inet marketing meetup group with 1k members and was a full-time affiliate 6 years ago (for a year) running ringtone offers and dating email submits. I stopped (ringtones got "complicated") to focus on my ecommerce business which I later sold (enough to live on for a year) and have worked for ecommerce companies ($7 mill - $15 mill in revenues) ever since. Getting back into things and so here we go...

Offer : Pin Submit
Geo : Africa (specific country)
Payout: 1.45
Traffic Source : Adivity
Tracking: Adsbridge

Steps Taken:
-Setup Adsbridge best I can. "How to" info is limited. I will flesh this out as the campaign collects data. I went with AdsBridge b/c I feel like it will help me, at least initially, with 1. rapid campaign deployment, 2. focus on the things I'm good at (data analysis) and 3. limit obstacles caused by things I'm not good at (landing pages / infrastructure setup).
-Created 5 angles picked 2
-Created banner variations with bannersnack
-Direct linking to start
-Setup Adivity campaign with the Geo, Specific Carriers, Carriers Data (vs Wifi), InApp and WAP/Site both, and all exchanged selected.

To reiterate, I'm a complete mobile newb. I realize I'm going to dump this campaign and get more pragmatic with my setup as I familiarize myself with mobile traffic and adsbridge (if that is the final platform I go with)... even if it's a $1k first step. I just wanted to start and improve as opposed to analysis paralysis.

Next Steps:
-Get creatives approved
-Analyze AdsBridge setup and fix issues
-Analyze incoming data and familiarize myself with general data flow

First Update:

All creatives were rejected from Adivity: "No present brand name over on image. its a kind of junk image."

I asked if the ad inventory differed from another network - frequently discussed on STM - because my creatives were tame compared to the offer sample creatives provided by the affiliate network and what I've seen running...

Upon further inquiry I received this response:
"These policies are from the Exchanges, not from us. We have access to more inventory than xxxx and we don’t sandbox our Inventory like xxxx does. As a result, our users have access to more volume on higher quality placements. However, this means the creatives have to be at a much higher standard. Also, if we do approve these creatives, it is likely we will be “fined” by the exchanges."

Lessons Learned:
-Adivity is going to require a better quality banner
-Creatives provided by the affiliate network aren't always guaranteed to get approved

It took me about three weeks to finally get a creative approved on Adivity. Dont give up. Keep submitting.

I finally found a legit looking AntiVirus pin submit on ClickDealer with .73 payout and a 2.5% conversion rate per network stats, but a shit $.02 epc. It was recommended by my AM.

Got 1 banner approved and uploaded some additional a few hours ago.

1/8/2015 Stats
Offer: Anti virus Single Click Flow
GEO: PH
Mode: Direct Linking
Clicks: 251
Impressions: 70,201
Payout:.73
CTR: .36%
Conversions:4
Spend:$17.78
Revenue: $3

Observations:
Adsbridge is not tracking conversions properly - submitted a ticket
My banner CTR blows. Hopefully the new ones (if they get approved will be better)

Action Items:
Get tracking setup properly and understand better overall what tokens flow where
Get some new banners
Incorporate a landing page
Determine if it's worth moving forward after getting new banner and lp data

Questions:
Any thoughts on the network stats for this offer? Impossible to tell without testing?

All comments / suggestions much appreciated!

Gotta get your CTR up and hit lower CPCs.

Next monitor Site/App placements closely and block non-performers. For low payout offers I will usually spend 5x-10x offer payout (so $3.5 to $7 spend per placement in this case).

But I would wait until you incorporate better banners and an LP to start optimizations.

Your Action Items look good. With better banners and an LP you'll likely be closer to break even. Then with optimization you can be profitable.

Update:
-Paused campaign after conversions dropped off.

-Submitted more banners to adivity and they all got rejected. Most of them didn't even have the word "anti virus". They were more along the lines of "Don't get hacked", etc.

-Spinning up similar AV banners on InMobi just to get something going and to familiarize myself with basic mobile setup.

-Hired someone to help make sure all my tracking is setup properly

Questions:
Any suggestions on direction?
1. Should I stick with AV Pin submits?
a. If stick with AV pin submits, should I try other traffic type besides basic banner campaigns?
2. Try sweeps OR game/app install instead?

Cheers

I'd advise moving away from AV Pin submits. They are only going to get harder to run - traffic sources, users and regulators like them less and less by the second.

1.1 seconds is a lot for a test from a proper testing server like Pingdom or GTMetrix.

Offload stuff like jQuery to a hosted libraries service like Google's or cdnjs.

The top volume app is surely Grindr, lols it's a pain in the ass... most people try to blacklist it before the campaign even starts. Very often chews up traffic and provides minimal return.

Right now I think your biggest problem is that it's all Mopub and you really want a better mix of placements from many exchanges. It could be your banners - again, AV is struggle street and will only get worse.

Appreciate the response, Zeno. I contacted Adsbridge.com to see if there is anything they can do about load times.

Quick update. I got InMobi setup which is a moderate pain b/c you need to get your "site" approved. InMobi started pushing traffic yesterday evening and then I received an email from ClickDealer saying the offer is paused.

Fortuitous about the Master Course and perfect timing. I've signed up and looking forward to starting next week!

I will continue to update this thread as I progress.
