Decisive || Newbie following the Mobile Appetiser approach

Hey guys,

About Me:
I'm 28 years old from Brisbane, Australia, currently studying towards a PhD in social psychology. I've always had an interest in entrepreneurship, and as a child I was pretty savvy to making money. I remember signing up for a subscription to Time magazine when I was about 10, only because they were giving away this nice looking watch as the free gift. The subscription cost me $40, and I managed to take the watch to the local pawn shop and sell it for $80. I have a background in sales and retail, as well as experience with research methods and statistics through my PhD, which I hope will let me hit the ground running with affiliate marketing.

After reading a number of the guides on STM, I've decided to go with mobile traffic, as it seems that volume is exploding worldwide at the moment, and is only going to get bigger. So I figure it would be best to jump on the mobile bandwagon as early as possible. I'm going to go with the Appetiser approach from the cookbook, though I will try to incorporate Voluum tracking so that I get used to working with it.

Traffic source: Decisive
Vertical: Mobile app installs
Offer: UC Browser, payout $0.32
Geos: BR

Budget: $8/day per campaign
Bid: $0.48 Smart CPM
ROI target: -50% ROI

Angles: 1) faster and more reliable browsing/downloads, 2) awards received and the popularity of UC Browser, 3) I will also test UC Browser ads with the best AdStrength scores on whatrunswhere as a comparison with my own creatives.

Campaign structure: For each angle, I will split into WiFi/Carrier and App/Site, giving 4 campaigns per angle and 12 in total.

Banners: I will add pictures of the banners at a later date, as I am still learning to use Photoshop. I will be following the tips from Mr Green's Perfect Mobile Banner ad thread.

e.g.,
Text: "Want faster downloads?", "Download failed?", "Slow internet speed?" followed by "FREE browser upgrade", "Download UC browser FREE", and a CTA "Tap to install".
Icon: Circular loading icon, download progress indicator, red flashing X, etc.
Language: I'm not sure whether I should translate into Portuguese, or whether to split-test English vs Portuguese. Any thoughts?

Current tasks:

I would love to hear any feedback, comments or tips. Thanks in advance!

All the best. You seem to be on the right track. Have you considered running a campaign on another ad network along with decisive?

This. You should definitely try other sources as well. My experience is that Decisive is full of bot shit traffic. That's why I'll be switching over to other mobile traffic sources.
There have been people getting their campaigns from -100% ROI to +100% ROI just for switching from Decisive to Leadbolt.

I have accounts with Adivity, Go2mobi, mMedia, TrafficJunky and Leadbolt. Not sure whether any of these would suit a newbie like me or the offer I've chosen. The appeal of Decisive was that it would be a good learning tool with the mobile appetiser guide. I've just deposited a large sum of money with Decisive. I'm tempted to continue with this campaign on Decisive just to learn the ropes, but may not continue with them past that. Do traffic sources provide refunds on money you have deposited on request?

^^^ Good luck getting an ad approved with adivity. Been trying for a month. Last time around they told me the banners were too amateurish. Never heard that before. They were made with Decisive's banner creator, LOL.

What is wrong with learning one traffic source in the beginning? Each one of his advertising accounts has different methods of optimization so in the beginning it might do more harm than good and spread him to thin.

Stick to your plan and try it out.

You really should add fresh sources to your platform. The current publishers have been boiled by swarms of newbies trying their recipes

In the meantime, how do I check whether my tracking is set up correctly with Voluum? I am using Decisive and F5 Media.
To check if clicks are redirecting fine just use your campaign link on your mobile phone and see if the click is recorded on Voluum. Then click in the lander to go to the offer and see if it shows up on the affiliate network side.

For conversion tracking you have to wait for a conversion to show up.

Awesome, thanks!

Absolutely test a lander.

Try bidding flat CPM if you're having no luck with smart CPM.

Try other angles and consider just dropping the offer... I mean, UC Browser BR is tried, tested and absolutely smashed so if it were me I would be picking up something more 'fresh'.

Thanks Zeno, appreciate the feedback.

For these kinds of apps landers are a must unless you have it direct at a much higher payout.

Give it a go and let us know how it goes.

hey Zeno - might you be able to say what you would consider a "fresher" offer?

many thanks

Hey Andrea - how did you manage to double your traffic? Like McSteve I'm using Decisive and getting lots of Clicks but very few Conversions - so maybe the quality of their traffic is not so good ??

Anything that's not PSafe or UC Browser in Brazil...

GoLauncher. Zero Launcher. In random countries. Any new app that hasn't been smashed for a year... Look them up on App Annie and assess performance history (store rankings) over the app lifetime and you'll get an idea of the level of activity the app has seen.

off topic but what is your Ph.D on ? Intersting subject the ol' social psych.

01-19-2015 06:31 AM #22 mcsteve (Member)

Looking at psychological predictors of people's attitudes towards euthanasia and assisted suicide. Not a very cheery topic, but it's interesting! Struggling to find the time to dedicate towards it since starting AM though... suddenly my interest in the PhD has dropped.

01-19-2015 09:29 AM #23 urbano (Member)

what's the data collection method ? Survey ?…(sorry I'll try to keep it on AM topics, but genuinely curious about your data collection method)

01-19-2015 09:59 AM #24 mcsteve (Member)

Combined lab experiments and surveys. So I'll run some kind of manipulation (e.g., make people feel socially excluded) and then measure whether their attitudes towards euthanasia change using surveys. And in case you're wondering, being socially excluded does in fact make you more supportive of euthanasia.
