amazo.com wouldn't match amazon.com under any type of matching system...
If you bid on:
amazo
amazon
amazon.com
mazon.com
ww.amazon.co
then those will all match "www.amazon.com" but how these target match up to bids and impressions served will depend on the system.
I'm not sure how this works now in PPV systems that let you target URL fragments... but don't expect a free lunch - e.g. if you bid $0.05 on w.amazon.co while the majority bids $1.00 on amazon.com, I doubt you're going to get much traffic at all with the $0.05 bid regardless of competition.
I know URL imploding has always been big in PPV but I don't see as many sources now that use URL targeting (the originals still do I guess? i.e. TV, LI, etc.). If the PPV system isn't poorly designed then on any one URL it will provide an auction opportunity to every campaign that matches and the highest bidder will take the first slice of the cake.
Someone who runs PPV with URL-based targeting will know more!

This "trick" can work on some sources, such as LI, maybe MT..
But it definitely wont benefit you much on quality sources like TV. In the past, testing that method led me to lose more out more due to proxy-bidding causing me to bid against myself.
LI has severely restricted this tactic as of late, however, and traffic quality has gone down significantly as has their volume. Dying traffic source indeed.
