I've been running some newsfeed ads for gaming campaigns, but the CPCs seem really high. Much higher than on RHS ads when I was running last year.
In the US I'm having to bid over $1.10 just to get any significant spend, but decent CTR ads (around 2.7%) aren't getting website clicks for less than $0.50. I need clicks for around $0.35 to break even. Same story in the UK and a couple of smaller countries. The demo size is around 100k.
If I bid around $0.60-$0.80 I get a trickle of traffic, but with a $150 budget spread across ads I'll only get around $20 spend per day. It seems like if an ad doesn't get a click within the first 30-40 impressions it doesn't get any traffic at that bid (each ad is in its own ad group with 2 duplicates).
Are these normal bid prices? Is it because it's getting to the end of the year and bid prices are increasing? Or is the demo size too small?
Thanks!
No, it's not normal.
But it happens every year - it's the Q4 surge of spending by big brands with holiday advertising, which drives up the CPM pretty much universally. It's not a good time for performance marketers.
