21-year old student has 540 days left to change the future.. Follow along!
Hi everyone,
Welcome at my follow along. It is my goal to AT LEAST post 30 days what I did, what the results were and what I'll be doing...
I'm now a member for 2 weeks now and it's time to take some action. Read my introduction here if you want to know a little more about my background. To explain the title: if I'm not going to succeed in 540 days I will have to get over to Plan B which is to get a job as a lawyer or an accountant.
Okay. This is my initial setup:
- Traffic Source: TrafficJunky
- 30 day testing budget: $5000 (I loaded the money up in my account, before I would change my mind)
- Niche: Adult dating offers.
- Countries: small ones. FIrst, The Netherlands and another one that looks promising.
I just finished 10 banners. I came up with some angles I didn't see before on my GEO. I am curious whether they will work or not. I also took one LP that performed well in the past for me, and changed the message to resonate with the banners' angles. I also test one offer and two different offer pages to find a winner. According to my affiliate manager, it is a fresh offer so I'm really curious if it is going to work..
I only concentrate on the NTV A spot for now and I am bidding just below the number one bidder.

Good luck man. Limiting yourself (whether by budget or time) can push you forward and can bring positive results. Just be strong and wise. Wish you all the best.

Whoa, I was in your position ages ago. If I didn't make it, I would have had to be a lawyer
Good luck!

. Gives me hope.
@ all
Thanks for your motivating words!
I've finally some stats to show:
I've ran 8 banners on NTV A on Pornhub on the 5th and 6th of December 2014 for geo A. They all got 21.000 views on an average, spending $12 on each. I spent $97 in total on it.
The highest CTR: 0.2154%
The lowest CTR: 0.1099%
The ad with the highest CTR got out of 28 clicks, 14 to the offer (50% CTR) and 1 conversion.
The ad with CTR of 0.1426% got 30 clicks, 12 (40%) went to the offer and 4 signed up (33%). I made with this one $20 dollar and it costed me $8 dollar. I will keep this one!
I've got two other banners that made $15 and spent $12. I will keep these in the cycle.
5 december 2015
Earnings: $50
Costs: $25
Profit : $25
5 december and 6 december 2015
Earnings: $80
Costs: $97
Lost: -$17
Friday converts significantly better than Saturday (?). I got a whopping 38% CR on Friday, and it dropped to 7.28% on Saturday.
I've also tested 2 offer pages. They both around 50 visits and the average CR of offer page #1 was 12% and the average CR of offer page #2 was 18%.
I tend from my gut feeling to say that this is a significant difference, so I got Caurmen's Bayesian calculator to let it decide.
It told me to test it out more. I only can be for 78% certain that offer page #2 is a better converter than offer page #1. I want it to be 95%. So I will keep them both in the cycle.
What to do for geo A campaign:
(*) I've tested several angle/image combinations I came up with. One looks promising, it had a CR 4 out of 12 but the banner CTR was not great. I will take the angle and play with the image a little bit to check if I can get the CTR up.
(*) The average LP CTR is 39.4% which is good, but maybe I can get it up a little bit or tweak something to get the CR higher.
(*) I'm going to bid for the number 1 position to get more traffic. The whole day I just got 110 clicks and I know from past experiences that there are a lot more eye balls out there. I want significant data quicker.
Geo B campaign:
With geo B I've tested 50/50 offer A a SOI offer paying $3.25 and offer B (a pay per sale membership site paying around 28% or something of each sale).
This were the results:
528 clicks to the LP, 111 (19.54%) to the offer, and 12 conversions for SOI offer and 11 signups for Pay per Sale memberships ite. Total conversions 23.
I just tested 1 banner and the average CTR was: 0.28%. It costed me in total $89 dollar and it made me: $45,5 back on the SOI offer and $24 for 1 converter on the pay per sale site.
Earnings: $45,5 + $24 = $70
Costs: $89
Lost: -$19
But maybe I will get conversions in the future on the PPS site.
What to do for GEO B:
(*) The LP has just a CTR of 19%. That's too bad. This should be improved. I don't know how, but I will check what I can do. I don't just want to rid off the lander because in terms of conversions it does really good an averga Cr rate of 21%.
(*) I will cut the PPS site of for now, and just check whether I can make the SOI offer profitable.
(*) Design new banners, because I just tested one here really quick.
Lessons learned:
(*)instability (geo a: crazy CR on day 1, bad CR on day 2; geo b Crazy banner CTR on day 1 and bad CR, day 2 better CR but bad banner CTR). It's complicated to take actions if the data is not consistent, but I can't wait ages because I don't get a lot of volume and I'm the second higher bidder.
(*) The fun part is analyzing the data (maybe it's because what I'm doing frequently in college), but now I really feel like a scientist. Getting real world data and find correlations, causation, statistical significance and possible explanations why the horny dudes out there like one banner better than an other..
Your input is always appreciated!!

What did I do today:
Geo A:
(*) designed new banners based on the promising ones from the 1st test and uploaded them and pending in TJ.
(*) did remove some "nonsense" text on my lander
(*) upped my bid to be the highest bidder (someone was outbidding me, my CR is now normal and my CTR of the banners went up).
(*) paused the banners that didn't bring no profit.. (earnings - costs) ( I didn't look at CTR or shit, because basically the CTR of all my banners are not above 0.2%. I've now 3
(*) 2 minutes ago I added a popup to my lander so I know tomorrow how it affects CR and thus earnings..
My earnings for today: $120
My costs: $156
Loss: $36
This is caused because I wanted to be the first bidder. On Saturday (yesterday) I was the third highest bidder fucking my banner CTR and CR rate significantly up.. If I can get my banner CTR up I can profit from this spot..
Issue with TJ: I changed my timezone to be compliant with my tracker info and my aff network, but it seems like even when I choose my timezone in TJ it still stayms on the standard tiezone... I e-mailed them but he doesn't understand my issue? Am I only experiencing "this issue?"
Geo B:
(*) I designed new banners
(*) As TJ tomorrow starts again with approving banners, I decided to pausea this campaign becuse it makes no sense to run it with just 1 banner that I already know enough about.

You seem to be on the right track.
Test test test.
Cut what doesn't work.
Improve on what does.
Good stuff.

If I remember correctly, changing the timezone in tj only affects the displayed time when using tj analitics. For day parting and stuff like that you can't change it from Eastern standars time -5
What I do when running campaigns in TJ is setup my trackers in EST too. And for dayparting I just calculate what time I have to put in EST. Actually I setup all my accounts in EST even though I live in belgium. This keeps all my reports monotonous througout all the traffic sources and aff networks.

Looking good man, keep on testing.
A few suggestions for you since Im also running some shit in smaller GEOs
- do not try to optimize everything too fast, its totally normal to see great conversions on one day and totally shitty on the other one, you need to look at the bigger picture. I like to judge based on at least 3 days of data, sometimes even a week. There simply isnt enough data, you need to get used to the fact that one day you might loose but the other one will make up for it, it will fade out with larger volume tho.
- its also very normal to see banner perform totally different from day to day, its also connected with the lower volume. It already happened to you probably and caused the huge difference between friday and satuday, you simply need to run a bit longer to see the real patterns, these spikes are normal with low traffic volume.
- absolutely test more offers and affil networks, from some reason I see bigger differences in small GEOs than in large, might be just my experience but thats what my data tells me. Quality offer is totally crucial with smaller GEOs, not that it wouldnt be just as important in larger GEOs too, but given the limited amount of data you will be working with, bad performing offer will totally screw up your data. If I discover I was pushing really bad offer, I often disregard the data I collected and start from scratch again.
Good luck

@ all
Thanks for the tips..
Here's some info on today and yesterday:
Costs $319
Revenue: $300
Loss: -19$
I've tested some new banner on this geo, but still can't get it consistently above 0.21% CTR. As soon as I manage to get a banner CTR of 0.3 or higher this campaign will be profitable while I'm the top bidder on this specific placement and while I just get the street payout..
So it's promising. It feels like I'm almost there, but at the same time I'm almost not there (yeah its paradoxal, but maybe you know what I mean: it could be just a set of good images that get you there, but at the same time it can takes months before you finally found them).
