Erik's Mobile Follow Along (33)

Erik's Mobile Follow Along

Hey guys!

Intro: It has been over 1 year since I started my first follow along (adult dating) and now it's time for a second round. I finally started with mobile and what I'm going to show you here is basically my first real mobile campaign.

I run my campaign for 3 days and it already looks very promising, but I need help with several things - which is my main reason of starting this follow along.

I'm probably not going to post detailed stats from everyday (will depend on my time), but instead focus on key elements of the campaign - such us optimization process and scaling.

Traffic source: Pops
Vertical: Mobile App Installs / Utility
Budget: ~$100/day
Landing page: Split testing 5 LPs for start

Updates:

Day: 1
Spend for the day: $3.47
Revenue: $5.10
Net profit/loss: $1.63

Details: Just started the campaign in the evening, nothing much here - but a small profit

Tasks: Let the campaign run for 1 full day and collect data

Day: 2
Spend for the day: $16.77
Revenue: $38.08
Net profit/loss: $21.32

Details: Totally impressed and paralyzed by stats - cannot believe the numbers - my first mobile campaign, unoptimized and already with $20+ profit!

Tasks: Switch and split test 2 new landers

Day: 3
Spend for the day: $32.64
Revenue: $37.40
Net profit/loss: $4.76

Details: 2 new landers were total losers and took my campaign into negative numbers, so later in the day I switched back to the ones from yesterday. Campaign went to positive. One problem that I'm experiencing here are bidding wars. My bids were up from the first day by like 25%. So I have to constantly monitor my bids otherwise I got not traffic.

So I immediately started thinking about scaling - I need more traffic - I got credit in other similar traffic sources so I copied campaigns and started testing:

Spend for the day: $71.89
Revenue: $102
Net profit/loss: $30.11

Boom - it converted like crazy! I never see something like this before in my life - I got to 100+ app installs/conversion in 1 hour! However it not took long as my traffic source suspended my account for 3 days. I was using more aggressive LPs which were not compliant with their TOS.

Tasks: I have to find a workaround ASAP, test less aggressive LPs - make them compliant ... or I don't know - help me!

"I don't want to have big eyes" (slovak frase for wanting/expecting too much), but I'm sure this campaign is huge. If I would have enough money, time and skill I believe it is easily scalable to $x,xxx - $xx,xxx profit/revenue per day.

But as someone said - I need to learn walk before run.

I'm looking for your feedback guys - if there is someone more experienced in pops traffic feel free to comment or PM me. I have several questions, but I'm not sure if I want to ask them in public.

Some motivational numbers that made me super excited:

Create a rule in Voluum for cloaking?

Country is not @Your Target Country@ ➡ Direct Linking on Offer

Yes - I tried a similar thing man, but there some smart traffic sources that can see it :-)

11-21-2014 05:15 PM #4 milobanski (AMC Alumnus)

Well, they just check for the GEO that you're promoting. Otherwise they'd constantly complain about geo redirects from your network.

11-23-2014 04:08 AM #5 erikgyepes (Moderator)

Okay, some quick updates:

I'm still waiting for getting back my account, hopefully by tomorrow I will be up and running.

I'm also testing a new traffic source with decent volume and it is performing similarly - I'm +/- at break even.

I need to cut some bad sources and to optimize it. Pity I cannot optimize by mobile variables (eg. models as there are many losers).

Also I just hit the limit of the Basic plan of Voluum, so I had to upgrade (one of the disadvantages of pop traffic si that there is a lot of volume, maybe Voluum is not the right tracking for pop as its gets kinda expensive)

Revenue wise I'm around $100/day with break even, so still lot of work to do.

Good follow along Erik. I'll start my mobile journey soon too

11-26-2014 09:54 AM #7 erikgyepes (Moderator)

Okay, I'm not updating this follow along as often as I would like to.

I'm grinding hard for the last week. Spending most of the time (16 hours) in front of the screen, going to sleep late, wake up tired. I have to be careful with my health, I start to feel it on my body (hurt in my back). Probably will go to thai massage soon haha.

But the thing is I'm really into this and want to really make it! And I feel I'm close!

So ...

It's been already one week that I'm into this mobile thing.

Here are my ~ overall stats so far:
Spend: $796
Revenue: $814
Net profit/loss: $18

~ real spend is a bit more so I'm slightly in loss

Which I assume is good because I'm collecting a lot of data for very cheap. I already have one small campaign that makes $10-20/day and the other ones are all in red, but I need to optimise them as I'll get more data.

Today I also got my first payment from the network, payments are on weeklies, so bankroll is healthy.

I would like to join more mobile networks - so I can split test the offers across networks as well. Currently I'm with AppFlood, I applied for YeahMobi (no reply so far) and MobVista (I'm not sure about this one). Any other recommendations on mobile networks?

Regarding the traffic source I mentioned in my previous posts - I got tired of getting my campaigns rejected all the time, so I asked for a refund, but after a rep contacted me I stayed with them - however I need to create new LPs that they can approve. Will give them a chance, but I'm now with the first source I started with.
I want to focus on them and master it - I already got an account manager who can help me answer my questions and I have a system that I'm trying to apply to my optimization, so will see in the next days how it will everything work out.

So my current tasks/goals:
- get over 1000+ app installs per day. (today I just hit 500+ installs/day)
- find winning angles/landing pages -> this is what I'm fighting the most at the time: my current idea/approach is to test angles/lps in a country where there is a high % of EN speakers and if the things will work out then I can easily translate it to their language + scale to other geos -> what do you think - good idea - bad idea?
- bring my $20/day to $100/day

That's all ... going to continue grinding!

Hi Erik, great progress here, wish you all the luck. Good work so far!
Have subscribed, looking forward to further progress... :-)

Dobra prace! MobVista is not exactly great and a lot of offers are re-brokered, but you can always split-test offers to see what works and compare CPIs there...

How do you get 50% winnings?

I guess you are talking about the numbers in the screenshot Erik posted, those are LP click thrus, not winnings.

I just got back from good back and shoulder thai massage + dinner and this is what I see after I opened my tracker:

1000+ conversions per day reached.

Now is time to focus on profit..

Same as matuloo said - those are not winnings but clicks through LP.

Another long day guys ...

I woke up at 7am and devoted all day to my small affiliate marketing dream.

Today I tried out for first time to hire translators from oDesk (instead of onehour) - and I'm really amazed how their system is sophisticated these days. I like how it enables you to watch over the shoulders of the people who are working for you (they have a screenshotting app so you can see your worker progress in real time!).

However I'm not very happy with the results of one of the guys I hired - he translated just 1 page instead of 6 and it took him 1 and half hour. So he will continue the job tomorrow. He has good rating, but he did only 3 jobs so far. Anyway he is cheap so whatever.. :/. He lives in a tier-3 country and has really nice intro video so I really wanted to help him out and give him some job/money.

I hope my goodness and karma will give it back to me

So now back to my campaigns ...

Today was one of the best days so far - revenue wise - and what is most important also profit wise!

One of my campaigns is hitting to $100/day and overall I was in profit as well.

Name: Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 00.09.10.png

But this is just a beginning I'm really spending all my time with this, no time for gf and anything other. I'm also spending 2-3x more then my initial plan so it's getting all really crazy.

I'm all in!

Next tasks:

Probably I should scale my winning campaign, but I'm not sure if I should go to different traffic sources or to different GEOs. I'm more comfortable to try out new GEOs. I rather want to master 1 traffic source properly. What do you think?

See you next time!

P.S. I'm still looking for a rep from YeahMobi - does anyone has a contact? Also other mobile networks. I'm putting all my eggs in one basket and I'm not very comfortable with it + I need to do split testing between networks.

Well, time for some updates.

On Thursday I hit $100+/day which was great, I was already thinking I did it but unfortunately I'm back on the ground again.

I analyzed the campaign deeply and found out that my profit was coming from 1-2targets/placements where I was able to get a plenty of traffic for that day with 150% ROI.

Unfortunately on Friday I got only 1/3 of the traffic and so my profit was smaller as well ($27). Today it's even 1/3 from yesterday so my profit is really really low ($10).

I will watch this closely as I wonder how can be there a such big drop in traffic - I was trying to bidding higher but it was not helping and in fact that placement is pretty cheap - I feel a bit suspicious, but it's too early will see what will be happening in the following days.

I also wonder how the weekend compares with weekdays in mobile.

So not really great news, but I'm hustling and keeping moving forward..

11-29-2014 11:38 PM #19 angry old lady (Member)

given that your traffic source isn't blind, it would be wise to check those placements and see who else is running there. could be that your competitiors have realized the same thing.

It is bling so I have no idea about the real source (unless I will ask from my traffic source and they will tell me).

You're doing good man, looks like you're well on your way, keep hustling!

12-06-2014 12:51 PM #22 erikgyepes (Moderator)

I'm sorry for not updating for a long time!

Still pushing the things forward!

I'm doing 1000+ conversions/day and $200-300 revenue/day. However the profits are very tight - only like $20-30/day and when testing new things then no profits at all.

I'm trying to collect as much data as I can.

Here are some tips I find on my way:

1) Optimization tip: I was looking my OS versions reports and I find that I'm getting a significant clicks from older Androids. Unfortunately my traffic source does not allow to cut by OS version so I had to find a different way.

My idea was simple - the older versions are not converting because the apps not support them. So what I did is simple find an offer that supports older Androids. Then in Voluum I created a simple rule like:

Code:
IF Android 3.2 OR Android 3.1 etc.. THEN redirect to THIS LP and THIS OFFER. That's it.
From 0 conversions and -100% ROI I flipped this to something like xx conversions and +150% ROI. Boom. This can make big difference on your campaigns.

2) Always test more offers. The mistake I made in the beginning was that I focused more on my landing pages than the offers. Then when I already had some winners I tried to split test offers and boom I find better converting ones. (even smaller payout offers can beat those with higher payouts)

Questions:

1) If there is an capped offer (AppFlood) how can I know that I hit the cap? Will I be notified, the offer will stop converting or I will just lose my conversions? (I'm going to ask my network for specific details, but they are not working through weekend so I'm asking it now)

2) When is it okay to ask for payout bump? How many installs you should have (daily)? I already hit my 10k overall conversion mark, so I believe I should try to ask for it.

Next steps:
- try to raise my profit margins (payout bump, lower bids, campaign optimization)
- find stronger angles, make better LPs
- split test offers on different networks

BIG GOAL ACHIEVED TODAY:

I just hit my $500 revenue/day!

Okay - I don't know what I really feel right now.

Sure it's very big achievement as I started with this just like 3 weeks ago. I see other guys are struggling for months.

On the other side I have big money "in the air".

And the thing that makes me quite uncomfortable is my tight ROI.

The ROI on the screenshot is not real - in real it's like half of what you can see.

I already asked for a payout bump, but my AM says that the payout is already maxed, but he will be checking on it tomorrow. Every cent would help me a lot.

Any ideas how to make more from it?

Thank you guys!

I would be more than happy if also some bigger affiliate could chime in and give some ideas how to milk this baby.

Anyway big big big thank for STM, it's the best community I see in my life!

That ROI (25%-30%) seems standard for the traffic you are running. I would get more traffic and scale. Not sure if you can optimize any further.

The bigger affiliates spend more per day ($3K-$4K) in order to make $1K/day profit.

This is gonna be tough.

I set up so many redirect rules so the networks wouldn't be able to see my landers, but in the end it was the site owners themselves that caught and reported me.

I've been trying to keep things compliant so I don't have to worry about account suspensions but those approved landers just don't convert as well.

On my second strike for this on one source.

Anyways, you're off to a fantastic start. Well done!

Sure, I already choose different network etc, that one was mistake - however if someone have balls for hardcore cloaking then probably can make some nice cash.

But some news:

I just got information in the morning from my AM that the offer is going to be paused. So from $500+ back to $0 again.

Such a roller coaster, already changed like 3-4 offers in a span of 3 weeks. But I assume this is how it works..

Great follow along mate.

12-09-2014 06:22 AM #32 acepowermarketing (AMC Alumnus)

Great follow along I have exactly the same issues you mentioned. Once I raised the volume the roi dropped a lot and they did not allow the cutting of poor performing os or brands or browsers..
Banner traffic sometimes allows that but the roi drops a lot faster than I can manage to bring it up again.
Ended up testing many more offers to bring the revenue back up.

Yes - Always Be Testing (ABT) is my rule which I consider very important. I always take at least 3 LPs that I split test and then I do variations on them etc. In one day I am able to test a bunch of LPs. And also offers as they are the key.

BTW I'm back in game - going to hit $200 rev. in a few minutes as I find 2 great offers and start running them at 3 geos where I had success before.

Once I have setup the basics everything is much faster. But as a lonely wolf I cannot compete with big teams however hard I'm trying.

Only thing is that I will probably have to stop all my campaigns for 2-3 days as I'm going to travelling and will be completely offline.
