I never understood why guys would spend so much money on cam sites when porn is free and hookers are probably a lot cheaper than what a lot of these guys drop every month on these girls.
All I knew is these offers do very well and are one of the main ways free tube sites monetize their traffic.
Well this documentary got funded on kickstarter and is supposed to come out in January. The trailer is pretty interesting. Helps me understand why these sites do so well.

Some of the similarities I've noticed between cam girls and affiliates:
Money
It can be lucrative for some girls, they can earn $2000+ a week. A percentage of the girl's earnings go to the cam site. For a site with 1000's of girls, this all adds up.
Same applies to affiliates, where a percentage of their earnings go to the affiliate network.
Remote working
Cam girls can work pretty much anywhere. Laptop + WiFi gives them that freedom.
Travelling whilst working has become a lifestyle choice for some affiliates too.
It's a secret
It's completely discrete. Behind closed doors, your neighbors haven't a clue what you're up to. Single moms, wives, girlfriends and daughters can earn a full-time income from a part-time job.
Long term prospects
For most, it's not long term. It's just a means to an end. For example, single mom want to earn extra cash before her kid starts school, then she'll get a 'proper' job. Or, some who are business minded use it as a stepping stone to running their own agency.
For affiliates, most (I'd guess) don't last more than 6 months. The ones that do, treat it like a business. A small number go on to build assets - forums, agencies, networks.
