To GIF or not to GIF?
With platforms that allow GIFs, do they across the board perform better than static banner ads?
Or is it a "it depends" kind of thing where you gotta test.

Definitely a "depends" kind of thing, i.e. a variable to test.
I have routinely seen non-animated banners do better... which is the opposite to what many would anticipate. One disadvantage animated GIFs have is that they are more readily recognised as ads.

From my experience in mobile 80% of the time GIFs have outperformed static banners.
But maybe it could be my static banners just sucked :P

With gifs youre limited to 256 colours so maybe that's an issue too?
There was an interesting post a while back of how png's outperformed jpg and the concensus was that jpg's got compressed on their way to the handset but the png didn't so the png ads stood out more.

Is this 110% the name of the game with ads and CTRs? To not look like an ad? Test like crazy to make your ad stand out while also looking like part of the site & you win.

Usually i always just rant to TEST TEST! ..which you should
BUT i usually see animated GIFs outperform still images.
