14 day guide to x,xxx revenue in mobile app installs
Hey guys
I saw many general guides and I thought maybe I could share one that's specific for a certain niche that's more relevant and in depth.
I'm still in the process of developing this guide to be as in depth as possible for a newbie so I appreciate any sort of feedback. I think this guide is definitely going to see many improvements in the next 2-3 months based on feedback.
Outline
1. Getting started -
A. grab yourself a vps server, I'm using vodien in Singapore,
B. grab your own wherever you are staying. Also get a cdn, I recommend maxcdn, it's easy to set up and cheap for a start.
C. Get 3-5 affiliate accounts from the following networks - click dealer, f5 media, Mundo media, app flood
D. Grab 2-3 traffic networks. The key here is to use a proven network yet not what everyone is using. Go source your own.
E. Install photoshop for editing banners, Dreamweaver for editing landers, and filezilla for uploading landers to your server
2. Researching your offer
The key here is speed, we want to be fast and as a result we sacrifice a little on everything else.
A. Ask your affiliate manager for the top offers by volume. If everyone else is promoting it, it's making money, the question is whether you can make money from it or not. Ask also for the top performing geos for that few offers.
B. Pick one offer and go to the top geos using a VPN and user agent switcher, and start viewing some sites. These sites can be gathered from live reports in decisive ad network. Rip the top 10 performing banners, and study why they are top performing. We are going to assume they are making money and we improve on it. The resulting banner you have may be completely different from the one you rip but hey, this is a starting point.
C. start by improving the ripped banners based on the following variables
- angle
- background color
- call to action
- figure the rest
For example we have a very common Antivirus angle in Brazil that says you have a virus! A improvement on that may be virus causing Sim card damage. Or trojan27Ax found on system files causing credit card breach.
D. Start testing all your banners through direct linking (landers will be handled later) against the 5-10 banners you ripped. Make sure you are comparing fairly. Compare your ad against the one you ripped and changed one variable. Not across to another ad which is totally different.
Use this link on more ideas to get angles - http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ve-Angle-Index
Use a statistical calculator to calculate and cut banners with 95% confidence. Make sure that there are at least 2000 views on each banner and the top banner has at least 10 conversions before you make any banner cuts.
E. Cut placement/site/pubs once they spend 3x cpa. Since most mobile cpi pays around 50c to 1 dollar you can set a hard limit here at $1.5-$2. Since you will probably only check this somewhere from 12-36 hours most of the placements would have over run, maybe to $5-6.
F. Repeat for the same offer in for up to 5 geos as recommended by your am.
G. Repeat for 3 other offers..
Pick the top offer and repeat for all possible geos.
Scale to different traffic networks.
Traffic sourcing
1. Stm recommendations
2. Google search
3. Mastermind group
UPDATES 23032015
STEALING FROM XX,XXX/day CAMPAIGNS
objective - to model campaigns after top affiliates who are making xx,xxx/day.
This update improves the speed and profitabiliy of your campaigns, and i will illustrate it with a case study.
Offer - Du Speed Booster
Traffic Source - Plugrush
Country - Indonesia
1. take the offer link from different affiliate networks and run it through similarweb and you will notice a few top advertiser domains and take note of that. you will also be able to see which countries the advertisers run on, this happens to be US brazil indonesia
2. run a campaign with top bid in indonesia on traffic source (in this case its pops but banners will work as well). top bid is neccessary to show all placements.
3. pick the top 10 placements with the most spent. these are the spots that the xx,xxx guy would be most interested in.
4. go to these top 10 sites(refresh 5-10x) and click on the banners/pops and note those that are from the advertisers shown in step 1. these are the profitable banner/lander and rip them
5. improve on these banners by thinking about their funnel, what is their angle? what are they selling? why do people buy? if you dont know a direct rip is fine you will still make money and then figure out later.
6. what is the top advertiser doing? what is the order of the showing of his ads? is it first? meaning he is the top bid? or is he bidding at a lower spot? its pretty simple if his ads show on the first spot hes the top bidder and u know how much he is bidding because plugrush shows this information. and if his ads show after 4-5 times u also know how much he is bidding by adjusting the price on plugrush and seeing your own position.
7. copy, wait for approval and roll in monies!!!
Special notes
you can repeat this on other traffic sources, geos and offers. it works the same way
you may want to think about angle congruency if u are using banners, how does the banner lead to the offer and then to the lander? what kind of images? what kind of headlines? does the banner look like the lander? does the lander look like the offer?
sometimes the ads showing on different sites can be slightly different, this is because the advertiser has 2 or more campaigns, why does he have that? for plugrush usually its just one campaign since they do not allow CPM bids.

Fast in setting up campaign and launching it?

Probably elaborate more on how to gauge which are the top 10 performing banners?

Fast in getting revenue in fast. If you do your own banners, how sure are you that this is going to work? If you rip one, you can be more certain that it's going to work, although no where close to the results you hope to achieve.
The top 10 performing banners are the banners you keep seeing. Keep in mind this is for mobile app installs, so you ignore all the pin submits, I estimate around 90% of the banners you see are not mobile app installs can be be ignored

Thanks Xavier for the guide.
I have a question. What do you mean by " Since most mobile cpi pays around 50c to 1 dollar you can set a hard limit here at $1.5-$2." Mind explaining? Thanks . Newbie here =D

It means that once the placement has spent enough beyond statistical significance to prove itself as unprofitable, we remove it. And usually that amount is around $1.5-$2. If there are no conversions this placement is unlikely to be good.

short and clean guide!
In other words, it's really not difficult to make money in mobile app install. You only need to use some angles that can "trigger" people to install the app because you get paid when people "install and open" the app.
Of course, I strongly DO NOT recommend you to use VIRUS as an angle because you're only shooting yourself in your head. Advertiser gonna find out about it and you'll be kicked out from the offer and all your earnings will be forfeited as well.
We're being know as "affiliate marketer" and the word "marketer" means that we want to market the features of the app. Not "creating your own" out of nothing.
I'm so sick of seeing people promote Apus launcher with "Your phone has virus" angle... (facepalm)

Maybe the example should be changed. The virus angle is not allowed and several affiliate networks have warned against this.
Whatever we choose to highlight in the app needs to be actually done by the app otherwise we face quality issues where the affiliate network complains of high uninstall rate. A good idea will be to actually download the app and read the app description. They usually have many functions which may not be highlighted obviously.

Keep in mind this is for mobile app installs, so you ignore all the pin submits
Shouldn't this strategy also work for Pin submits?

I don't know, maybe it could? The thinking patterns could be different though, the way we look for profitable traffic sources, the payout, the angle development thinking process

Great info! I realize this is a noob question but you mention "B. Pick one offer and go to the top geos using a VPN and user agent switcher, and start viewing some sites."
1. Do you go to top geos on phone or laptop?
2. If mobile, how do you download/install user agent switcher? (Im on iphone5)
3. Would this be an example of a site from Decisive live reports - m.nokia.xpressbrowser.com?
Again, many thanks. Great tutorial. Looking forward to working on it.

very good guide, i am in the middle of my first app install and it really helps to clear things up. In order words I think that things are done better when the instructions seem easy, if that makes sense. And in this case it does

Its the easy go-to angle. Eventually it'll be phased out and completely blocked by all traffic sources.

I hate to sound like I haven't given the newbie guide's their due diligence, but how many campaigns does this work out to being? I see 10-20 banners in total (half of which were ripped as a control group), four offers, across a combination of (2-3 traffic networks)*(x placements/sites)*(y affiliate networks should the offer exist in multiple networks).
Ok, after typing that out it seems close to obvious, but I still wouldn't find myself being able to put an estimated cost on this particular course of action.

1. i do it on my desktop
2. not too sure about iphones, if u are already on an android phone u dont need an agent switcher
3. refer to the live reports under sites, not apps. not all sites will refer you to a proper site, some of them are networks and some are broken links

it can be done within 14 days, if you already know the system. in fact i took more like... 3 months to figure out the whole system. but if i were to repeat it i think, just maybe i could do it in 2 weeks.

yes there are many many combinations, think of it as a lottery, the difference is that whatever works is very likely to continue working, and u cut out whatever does not work, so imagine
3 offers x 1 traffic source x 5 angles x 10 geos = 150 lottery tickets, you just need a few to hit to make some gold $$

any suggestions how we can develop the angle? to remain compliant and profitable yet leverage on other's previously proven work, in this case i assume the virus angle is working, but breaking too many rules
