Let's Have a Bash At Adult Paid Traffic (7)

Let's Have a Bash At Adult Paid Traffic

So its finally time to immerse myself in Paid Traffic and what better place to start than the adult niche?

Bit of background first, I've been a member here for a while but apart from a very poor punt at POF many moons ago I've never really bought any traffic, everything has always been SEO for me but in a white hat fashion. From this I built an Authority site which pushes visitors towards my own supplement products. So natural progression was to develop a product purely to send paid traffic to.

I've always been attracted to the adult space from a business perspective so it made sense to create something to take advantage of the copious quantities of traffic available in this area. Bit of digging around and research and I finally went for a muscle/dick pill type product. The object was to create something that could actually work as I would rather try and add value than go for the quick kill. This also led me to avoid the free trial route for a couple of reasons, one to avoid the churn and burn of merchant accounts and to stay safe from the authorities and also I personally want to try and give people what they want at a fair price and avoid the horror of rebels etc etc. A marketer with heart if there is such a thing (this may be point of failure)

So its a straight up CPS offer, I own the whole route from top to bottom including the network (hasoffers makes things so easy) so can do pretty much what I want and there's no excuses. Only thing I don't own is the traffic source and that is the potential point of failure in the whole project due to a huge lack of experience.

I won't bore you with the finer details but trackers, servers, CDN etc are all in place, stock is in the warehouse.........so just need some sales now

Strengths:

I own the offer
I own the network
Product in stock and ready to go
Decent budget
Instant payments

Weaknesses

Only one offer
Straight up sale with no free trial
Relatively high value sale $60 to $180
Product is new and untested for conversions/ price points etc
No experience in Adult
No experience in Buying Traffic especially in Adult

Anyway nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

How Will I get the traffic?

Going through the copious quantities of info on here I've narrowed things down and will aim to try and get one traffic source working, test everything out then hopefully scale from there. Lets load up one of the popular sources mentioned plenty of times on here and see what happens.

To keep it simple initially I'll target one GEO and unfortunately its one of the Tier 1's just to make it a bit harder. 18 banners in different angles, 3 landers and the final product page.

Ill start off steady with a view to just getting some data and learning my way around things. First day running things across 11 placements, desktop mobile and tablet:

Still playing around with best way to set the campaigns up but above image shows the 3 landers and I can drill down from there, already its very early days but lander 3 is already showing promise in comparison to others? Revenue is what would be paid to an affiliate so theres plenty of room to pay bump myself but this keeps things more realistic. Already some of the banners are showing promise over the others but still at around 3k impressions each so very early days. CTR on the traffic source is hovering around the 0.2% mark

As I say I'm a noob when it comes to all this, already Im spotting things that could be done far better from a process perspective but like everyone says best way to learn is by doing. I'm under no delusions its going to be a huge learning curve.

Any tips, advice, feedback gratefully received.

You should post your landers...VSLs are nearly essential these days.

I've run quite a lot of M/E, it's become a lot more difficult in the last 2 years. Decline rates on CCs are just plain silly.

Also, go mobile.

And $36 is way too low for a CPS offer on Adult, most affiliates would require $50 min.

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. $36 is an initial point for my own reference and is a percentage of sale to gather data, $50 is achievable if I went down the affiliate route but that is not on the horizon as I do not have any experience in this area.

VSL's are doable but keeping it simple initially just to get a feel for things but Ill put it on the development list.

Same with a mobile developed landers etc, all to be developed as I go along, main idea was to get something up and go from there.

Thanks

Lots of adult mobile traffic, I would definitely watch your data closely and build out an entire funnel just for mobile if mobile is a) working well or b) working terribly, relative to desktop.

Since you own the tracking/offer and have HasOffers, is there anything Voluum provides that HasOffers can't?

I'm not familiar with using HasOffers in this capacity, do they have LP split testing and all the data e.g. device/ISP/etc. tracking that Voluum has?

I have hasoffers because we have a couple of other products with affiliates who it is used for so it made logical sense to carry on using it for this product. As far as I know you can only rotate landers equally and not have weight bias so its not quite as good as voluum for this. I will also be using volume for other network offers in the future so it makes sense to learn it as much as possible.

As far as your observations regarding mobile are concerned then the first weeks worth of testing is in which has thrown up some interesting data.

Basically mobile has been a bit of disaster but it is mainly down to the landers being not properly optimised for mobile, they work but not as good as they could so they are not being completely redesigned with mobile specific versions as well as desktop.

The offer works well in all devices so if I can get the landers better for the next test there should be some improvement.

As far as the landers were concerned then after a few days one of them was performing half as good as the others.

This is number 2 in the image above so it was cut, then a short while later the number 1 lander started going in the same direction while number 3 performed the best (but still not great)

So next step is to create another couple of versions of this best performer and going from there (including the mobile versions)

Next up placements;

Again you can see the mobile stuff was a mess but at least I know now where the problem lies

Finally the angles/styles of ads:

At least thats given me some insight and direction to go from. The average CTR was about 0.2% so pretty poor with room for improvement

Next Steps

Create 3 mobile optimised versions of the best lander style
Explore possibility of creating a VSL
Set campaigns back up splitting them out to mobile, tablet and desktop instead of one big mish-mash.
Create another batch of banners based on whats performing best for each traffic type.
Focus on the better performing placements

Lessons learned

I started this with no idea what I was doing, I now know slightly more than I did.
Theres plenty of volume in adult, Im not even scratching the surface of what is available traffic wise.
On the flip side of that it would be very easy to burn through a ton of money while still not learning anything.
Never presume anything you only learn by trying things out.
There are some very clever people in adult who know things inside out, it is going to be very tough competing against them when you have such little experience.
It is very easy to get completely confused

Hmm, I don't think you have enough conversions (only 3...) to confirm with confidence anything about mobile vs desktop or placements, landers, etc.

You need more conversion data.

Since it's running quite in the red, I would initially focus more on landing page testing try and substantially boost CTR and CVR.
