Games - all roads lead to Rome (21)

Games - all roads lead to Rome

Hi fellow STMers.

I've just recently started as an affiliate - do have quite a bit of experience in the industry itself though, but still have a lot to learn. All advice is highly appreciated. I don't mind being it critical, as long as it stays constructive. What I've seen on this board so far is fantastic.

I've got my tracking in place (Voluum), I'm set with Mundo and F5 for networks (applying for a few more with stronger focus on games). I could use some advice on traffic sources (I'm with decisive so far and just signed up with Bonadza).

I've picked up a newly launched offer as per my AM. It's supposed to convert at 5.2% with an epc of $0.11.

Here's my LP. This is for tablet/pc traffic. For traffic, I'm trying decisive for the tablet portion (bit of a gamble, anyone tried promoting browser based games on tablets before?), and waiting for my campaign to be approved on Bonadza.

This currently has a CTR of 16% based on 100 clicks.

Try not to put much weight into the epc's and cr's you're given by the network. Even if they may be truthful and accurate the other affiliates running it might be using different types of traffic (i.e. ppv, ppc, direct buys) which would skew the numbers up or down.

A better indicator of a good offer is the revenue and volume the offer is doing.

Regardless, you're doing the #1 best thing to which is testing so keep it up.

Make 4 or 5 more LP's with different angles. You always wanna be testing vs something so you can improve upon it.

Add in a few of these elements:
- some reviews of the game
- make in-game screenshots more prominent
- stronger, more emotional ad copy. give them a reason to play the game

Tried to follow your advice.

- added 2 reviews close to the social media icons
- added a slider at the bottom that rotates 8 (awesome!) in-game screenshots
- revised the three bullet points, more pushy ad copy, trying to give them a reason to play. (comments on the copy?)
- also added a small 98 icon at the top to indicate review rating of the game

= now split testing the two pages.

I would try testing one of the reviews as the actual headline.

Make the 98 stand out more. You could try putting 98/100 to provide some context.

Regarding the bullet points sell more benefits, less features. "Finest real-time strategy, Ancient Greece...." is a feature. Get more into your prospect's mind and appeal more to their emotions.

If you don't have it already I suggest reading Cashvertising. You can apply several strategies in that book to your landing pages.

Overall I would just make more variations of this lander. Get more creative, try a different approach to selling it, change up the design. Again get like 4 or 5 testing at a time so you have more data to compare.

Yes test bigger variations.

E.g. remove everything but the background. Add the quote in larger text in the middle with no black background, just over the background. Maybe a drop shadow or a transparent black box if it's hard to read. Put a CTA button below it. Simple often works.

Thanks guys, working on a new version now. I've put in place two new campaigns today and waiting for approval, so traffic should come in Monday. Plenty of time to come up with variations.

zeno, do you mean a white instead of black background? Leaving the image on the outside? = Black font on white background?

edit: Gotcha. Unfortunately the background is cut that way. I'll see if I can find a replacement or the full image.

Done with the simple version, off to the benefits version. Curious to see how the simple version turns out.

Problem I'm going to face here is how to get relatively cheap desktop traffic to the offer. Payout on this is $2.40. CPM costs seem very high on Bonadza for the US.

Actually CPM bidding can be very benifitial when it comes to promoting games. I used to run these types through Sitescout getting US eCPCs down to $0.01 b/c of achieving extreme CTRs...Go wild on creating 'highly interactive' ads. You're doing desktop here, so use the power of Flash - or HTML5 for that matter.

Thanks for the encouragement. I actually have 2 campaigns set with sitescout and am hoping to get them approved tomorrow. I suppose you had to do quite a bit of tweaking to get down to $0.01? What were your initial CPM bids?

For Bonadza, bid really low campaign-wide to begin with and see if you can get any traction with cheap placements.

Ok, I'm back, and have learnt a few things in the past couple of days. Learning to not give up is part of this journey.

I tried a few campaigns that I had seen other people run successfully before, grey/black hat style. Just not for me- but at least I got some data out of the $150 or so bucks that I spent on traffic.

a) I have to be more precise when buying media (targeting)
b) follow your passion
c) my passion is games, and I finally got a network that has so many games available (Affiliaxe).

d) This journey is about not giving up.

When I had started a few weeks back, I had written this here in my notebook:

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

Gotta stick to it.

That's great Milobanski! I would recommend joining iQU and GamesPipe as well, they have a ton of really great gaming offers.

I believe that you have a huge advantage here since you're really passionate about games. Just keep testing new campaigns/angels/ads and follow Zeno's advice. He's the go-to person here when it comes to gaming. He helped me a lot with my campaigns. I just recently started running gaming campaigns, but I'll be happy to help if I can!

Good luck man!

Awesome houssem, exactly what I needed. I'll sign up with them immediately.

This will hopefully allow me to split test offers across networks.

Here's a goody that I just found for those following. This allows you to generate images based on game fonts. Let's say you want to mimic a game's font on your lander for a heading or sub heading, that's the place to go:

So, I've picked up my first game on Affiliaxe. Recommendations by my AM were the following (I had mentioned DE as a geo I'm interested in). I scratched a bunch of them. They are either trash or too difficult to convert for the payout.

[Browser Game] Tribal Wars 2 - SOI [DE] UK: 0.80 DE: 1.35 Euro
[Browser Game] Hero Zero - SOI [AT/CH/DE] DE 1.20 Euro
[Browser Game] Slotomania Mobile Optimized [CA/NZ/DE/SA/SG/UK/DK/NL/NO/FI/SE] 1.50
[Browser Game] Tibia - SOI [TIER 1] 0.35
[Browser Game] World of Tanks - DOI [AT/CH/DE] 0.95
[Mobile App] [Incentivized] Castle Clash - Android [DE] 0.32 (incent)
[Browser Game] ACE Online [Tier1] 2.70 USD
[Browser Game] Battle Dawn - SOI [US/UK] 1.30 USD
[Browser Game] Aion - SOI [AT/CH/DE] 1.30 Euro
[Browser Game] Slotomania Mobile Optimized [US/AU]
[Mobile App] CSR Classics - Android [US] 0.52 USD
[Mobile App] FarmVille 2 - iPad [US] 1.59 USD

I've decided to run two small campaigns on decisive for iPad for Farmville2. It's a popular offer in the US. Interestingly enough this is the game that made me go into AM, just because it started such a craze when it first came out. (Funnily enough I've never played it...).

Landers, I've kept it VERY simple for this first test. Just played with above mentioned game-fonts generator and a button generator - I find this one easier to use than the one zeno recommended because it allows you to download the image right away.

Banners, I am actually using the given banners by the advertiser. Something to work on for sure, but I thought I'd give it a try. What's your guys opinion on using given banners? Any success in the past?

11-07-2014 01:20 PM #17 caurmen (Administrator)

I'd strongly recommend against using the advertiser's banners. They're generally a) terrible and b) waaaaay overused.

Trying to get hold of the advertiser's media pack and building ads from that, though, is a very good idea.

11-07-2014 07:02 PM #18 milobanski (AMC Alumnus)

Thanks caurmen for the advice.

I'm willing to burn $20 for this test. The banners seemed decent - certainly room for improvement, but they were along the better ones I've seen so far from advertisers.

After decisive had initially rejected my campaigns because of geo redirect I'm now live with both campaigns. At least decisive acknowledged it was a mistake on their end.

Is this normal? Looks a little fishy to me to see 100% of bids won result in clicks. These numbered apps don't really make sense either.

Hey milobanski,

What you need is Angle.

Think of

1. Championship Prizes
2. Christmas Events
3. Play and win games

etc

Could be interstitials + accidental clicks. Too little data to tell. If they get more and are at say 50 wins 50 clicks then that's definitely not real and I'd probably err on the side of caution and just get rid of them.
