Questions about VPS

Hello!

I've just jumped in, and taking in information as fast as I can. I bumped into this idea of having my own VPS, and I'm a little bit puzzled over it.

So, my question is: what do we need a VPS for? Is it so that we can track what's going on and thus optimize everything? Are there some other reasons?

And the next Q is, how sturdy of a VPS would I need? Earlier I was doing black hat SEO, and I offered some pretty serious use to one of the dedicated servers from Solid SEO VPS.

Now that I'm just starting out, I was thinking that I don't probably need some kind of BEAST of a VPS to begin with. Having said that, I really like Solid SEO, so I'm curious to hear what do you guys think of these packages? Could I get started with something on the lower end?

Are you going to host your tracker too? or landing pages only?

Dario, I wish I could answer that one!

What's recommended? Should I host it as well?

If there's some thread in here about trackers, then just shoot a link and I'll read it

On the same note, what kind of tracker would be recommended? I'm going to be starting out with a very modest budget of around $300-$500 / month, so I probably don't need some beast of a tracker to begin with?

But let's say I got a tracker and I'm going to host it at my VPS. In that case, would some of those Solid SEO packages be enough to begin with?

I wouldn't touch anything SEO related, you can get a decent VPS for $10/mo from DigitalOcean or Linode, no reason to go elsewhere.

If you want a manged service you could use BeyondHosting.

However, since you are new to this and have a quite low budget, I would recommend using Voluum (free + no set up on your end) and hosting landers on a CDN (e.g. Rackspace Cloud Files or Amazon CloudFront), at least in the beginning so that you can get campaigns out the door without the technical kerfuffle of a VPS and self-hosted tracker.

Zeno, that's great news! I almost shitted my pants when I heard the word VPS, as I was paying for something like $160 per month for the server I had

I'm still somewhat in the middle of deciding my game plan, but I'm most likely going to take advantage of some proven offers here in Finland (adult), so my traffic levels won't be ridiculously high, either.

Since this is a newbie zone and I'm probably allowed to ask the weirdest questions, I'll just shoot one right away. So, back in the day I would get a host, and they would provide me with a cpanel where I could install Wordpress... So, is the Amazon CloudFront essentially a host with a cpanel AND a CDN? Or do I need to host my stuff somewhere else and then use the Amazon thingy to have the site load fast everywhere in the world? I'm familiar with WP, so I would like to be able to continue working with it in order to not get stuck.

Okay zeno, I'll start out with what you recommend, and I'll use Voluum as my tracker.

Well, I can't advise using Wordpress when starting out with AM campaigns - it will hold you back, it generally leads to slower landing pages, and it requires you to run it on a server, which then shackles you to one physical location.

If you want to run campaigns in Finland, using landers built on WP and hosted on a VPS in the US is a bad idea. I'm not saying it won't work, it just wont work as well as following the consensus of the performance marketing community.

Amazon has a lot of products. S3 is their file storage system where you would store files. CloudFront is their CDN that distributes your S3 content around the globe.

This is not the same as a server/host - there is no cPanel, no OS, you can't install WP, etc. It's just for delivering static content like images, html, and so on.

If you wanted to use WP and a CDN, all you could do is offload your static content onto a CDN. Page loads from your server but images/css/js load from a CDN, which will boost page load speed a bit though won't at all make up for any server location or WP usage shortcomings.

If you really want to start well in AM, you should throw WP to the wolves. It has it's place - e.g. for decent looking product pages and long copy sales pages amongst other things, but I would never recommend it for AM campaigns in virtually any situation.

All right, having read your answer to my other post @zeno (do these @ symbols work?) I've decided to ditch the WP.

Hmm, I need to look into the S3 then. Obviously, I'll be running campaigns all over the world, but for now I'd like to test out a couple of things I have going on in this country. If S3 combined with CDN is the best option, I'll just go with those then.

I just downloaded Muse, and I'll see if I can get something done with it. Any templates (or tips on how to get going) are greatly appreciated for the LP's!

Nah @username does nothing here!

Muse is pretty straightforward - check out http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...esktop-Landers

Wow, that was an EXCELLENT tutorial!

So, is it that you would use Muse for creating LP's from scratch and then Dreamweaver to work with templates?

Sorry for posting the same question in 17 threads! I'll try to stick to 1 place at a time

But in any case, this was very good tutorial. Doing HTML used to trigger very bad feelings in me, as using NVU back in the day was pretty much my only experience on creating websites. Now with Muse, it's a breeze! Awesome.

One question came into my mind here as a newbie: which one should I do first? The angle?

So, would a reasonable work order be 1) angle, 2) banners, 3) LP?

I use Adobe Edge Code, SublimeText and Firefox for most code (template) editing. Dreamweaver I find too bulky for doing simply things but it does have good syntax highlighting.

Focus on angles first. Banners should come naturally from these. Then, your LPs should be congruent with your angles, so naturally they come later in the piece.

They all gel together but in terms of chronology, usually you would do creativity and marketing >>>> technical implementation.
