Direct Linking FB

Hey folks, I'm trying to just test something out and want to get data asap.

Will this still work for FB?

I wouldn't recommend iFraming at all when you are new and value your account.

Read through my FB guide - pick an offer that is safe to run on FB - and use geo-redirection properly to avoid FB ever seeing an affiliate URL.

If you don't understand and execute this kind of tracking/geo-redirection properly on FB, it is only a matter of time before you kill your ads account.

Got it. Maybe I shouldn't listen to my affiliate manager. Cause I asked him what most of his affiliates do and he says that they just direct link the offer. There's no actual landing page..

That may be the case - there is a nuance here.

Direct-linking means that when a user clicks an ad, their immediate (and final) final destination is the offer page.

This does not mean you used the affiliate link directly in the FB ad URL.

You could have gone FB Ad > tracking system URL > intermediate lander that shows a 'loading bar' for 1 s > affiliate link > offer page.

That would still be direct-linking.

Just don't do FB Ad > affiliate URL > bad times.

For sure, at the moment I iframed it on my custom URL domain? Still bad?

Iframed what - your tracking system URL?

As long as you are geo-redirecting correctly you are in an OK position.

I avoid iFrames though as they can break landing pages (e.g. offer page signup may break and not work > GG -100% ROI forever).

Hmmm.. I think I rather just create a landing page. I think it's more fun that way haha.

What about the Campaign URL from Voluum? In the Noobie Plan which is free, we can't use our own tracking domains so the domain will look like this: http://xxxxx.trackvoluum.com/...................

Would this URL look ok in Facebook's eyes or they might find it "suspicious"?

It's fine.

Asides from their blacklisting that results from infringements, and possible word blacklisting (e.g. maybe they filter for "fuck" in URLs), they couldn't care less.

Tracking is an integral part of advertising and traffic sources know this, which is why they generally care about the destination, not the redirect hops occurring in between.

HI zeno,

Sorry for asking you the same question again but since the last time I asked I didn’t launch any campaigns and now that I’m thinking of it again, I still have some concerns about the safety of my account if I use the standard tracking URL from Voluum.

I did a test. I created a campaign which redirects from the Voluum tracking URL to Google and I threw it to the Power Editor. I have the MyWot plugin installed in my browser and the MyWot sign in the ad preview appeared yellow.

It makes sense that tracking itself isn’t an issue for Facebook but I fear that this particular domain might have been abused by a big number of little affiliates just like the offer URLs from affiliate networks. Have a look at the screenshot below:

Do you still think I’m fine by using Voluum's tracking domain?

Set a Cname

Wow thanks! This was a very smart idea.

Ok this seemed like a good idea at first. However after reading more carefully through Ngo's guide, I saw that it's intended for those who are using a paid plan of Voluum (or when it was still Beta). The whole point of why I'm asking about this is because I'm at the noobie plan and I want to see if I can avoid paying $99/month or buying CPVLab just to have my own domain on the tracker. I initially thought that I could still use this trick and create a Cname record for every single Voluum campaign I launch, but now I'm having some second thoughts about the practicality of this.

After how long will a Cname record take effect?

If it takes some time like a few hours then it's impossible to work with this and in that case I'd still be interested to know about how risky it is using trackvoluum.com as I previously asked.

CNAME records will activate instantly as long as you haven't used the CNAME before (cached records may then exist).

You indeed need the paid plan for this and I would recommend just investing in that if you are worried.

CPV Lab is a good tracker, though I would prefer Thrive, and if you go down that route you will add a lot of technical overhead + lower click tracking speed (performance is key!) depending on your server configuration and your user locations.

It's more straightforward to just pay for Voluum and go from there. That $99 investment will save you a lot of time that is better spent on your campaigns.

Zeno, I have a similar question:

I am promoting a mobile utility app for Android in Facebook's news feed.

The inbound flow is: FB AD -> Voluum -> my lander (a few benefits and a CTA) -> Voluum -> Aff link -> Google Play.

I also split test direct linking where the flow is FB AD -> voluum -> Aff link -> Google Play.

I set up GEO redirects in Voluum as per your guide, yet after running the them for a few hours my ads got disapproved with the following message:

Here's why we couldn't approve this ad:
Your ad wasn't approved because the website it links to is not viewable or functioning properly. Please check the URL associated with your ad to make sure that it:
• Has content on it
• Loads properly and without an error (ex: “We can’t find what you’re looking for”)
• Doesn’t initiate a file download (ex: .PDF, .JPG, .EXE)
• Doesn’t lead to a link that says "The external link you are going to has been marked as abusive or malware"

-and also-

It looks like one or more of your ads violate Facebook’s Advertising Guidelines or Terms of Use.
These policies protect everyone on Facebook and help make it a good experience. We reserve the right to choose not to accept ads containing or relating to certain products or services.
Here's why your account was warned:

The best way to make sure this doesn't happen again is to follow our ad policies, which you can find in the Help Center.
Thanks,
The Facebook Ads Team

Questions:
1) Can this be caused by using the free voluum package and thus the voluum url? Should I go premium and run it from my own domain?
2) Is FB -> voluum -> aff link -> google play a bad practice?

Thanks!

01-18-2015 02:33 AM #16 zeno (Administrator)

1) Possibly. As time goes on using the default URL will get more and more risky, as FB may blacklist xxxxx.trackvoluum.net and similar, or their security partners might.

2) Yes. It's best to avoid this when submitting ads, hence the bridge lander which makes your ad destination unrelated to any sort of app store. It's better to adopt this practice permanently, even if overzealous, so that you never deal with FB quirks. After approval all FB reviewer/bot clicks should still go to the bridge lander.
