Banners vs Landers (Warning: n00b-question)

Hi

I have a really basic n00bie question here.. I know what a banner is and how it works. But how does a lander exactly work? Do I link to it from my banner? So that the user flow is:
banner -> lander -> offer -> conversion?

Or do I show the lander first somehow (for instance a pop-up):
lander -> offer -> conversion?

A lander = a landing page = some web page that people 'land' on.

A landing page is crafted to sell something - it can be whatever design you want, your goal is just to get people interested in the offer before you send them to it where they are then outside your control.

You can send users from banners to the offer directly, a.k.a. directly linking.

If running pops/direct nav, you can also direct link to the offer.

You can also do banners > landers > offer or if running pops, lander > offer and both of these give you more control over the sales funnel. We just call that... urr... not direct-linking?
