The best way to target your ads?
Hey guys,
just wanted to add my 5 Cents to Facebook targeting.
I am using this technique for a while and it gives me pretty good results.
I studied a lot of FB Marketing courses and surprisingly many advise to do pure guesswork when it comes down to proper targeting...
Many marketers enter a bunch of metrics and start split-testing. However, I never believed this was the route to go. Here's what I am doing.
Let's say you are running a social media marketing blog and you want to drive more traffic to it.
I go to Google and type in the following: [niche] + blog or forum.
So, in this case I'd search for "social media marketing + blog".
I am doing this to find out who the biggest players in this niche market are... surprise, surprise: it's Social Media Examiner.
I take their URL and use the followign resources for some stats on their site demographic:
If you are lucky and the website is listed within Quantcast, then it's a great tool to get insight about your target audience. Just try entering
www.socialmedaiexaminer.com into Quantcast and take a look at the data that appears - it will blow your mind!
With regards to the interest section, I have to say that Facebook did a terrible job on merging the broad interest with the precise interest section. Targeting became a lot more inaccurate and it's way harder to find good "buyer keywords."
However, what you can do is trying to find experts and famous products /services in your niche market and see if they are listed within the interest section. If your niche is big enough, then you might be lucky...
This gave me better results than targeting some generic sections like "social media marketing".
======
Ok guys, end of the lecture haha.
What are your thoughts on this?
What tools are you using to find out the age range / gender / location in your niche market.
More importantly, how to you determine the keywords for the 'interest section'? I was using Google's keyword tool in the past, but having a hard time doing this nowadays.... Let's all say thanks to Marc Zuckerberg!
Leave your comments and thoughs below!

Hi Patrick,
some nice advice thanks. Definitely worth a look. If you have a US FB account audience insights is the best tool IMHO, Zeno just did a great post about using it. you would be amazed how much you can drill down.

If you want to know everything about an fb page's audience you can scrape their ids, upload them and if not big enough, build a tight 3% lookalike and use that when you open up audience insights. It'll give you a ton of info on that audience. Age, gender, other pages liked, household income, occupation etc. With the new TOS announcement that may not work for much longer but I've used this technique just the other day.
Otherwise using simple graph search works well too.
