Hi Gang,
I recently created a viral website similar to viralnova.com
I decided to monitize the site with adsense. I placed banners
in the header and right side column of the site and post pages.
My traffic strategy has been FB advertising for website clicks directly to
my most popular posts. I'm targeting people in certain south american countries
who's interests are other popular viral websites like Buzzfeed.
My FB ad costs are just 0.2 cents per click which is great. But my adsense
earnings are low - less than 20 cents in the past week. My advertising
costs are more than $20.
So I have 2 quick questions...
1.) What do you think is the best ad network other than Adsense?
2.) What do you think are the best locations for banners on a viral site?
Thanks!
J
Perhaps a little off-topic, and I'm not sure if this (still) works, but why not create an adsense page in a niche that is proven to have high advertisement payouts?
Insurance, stocks etc. ?
Generally speaking, an arbitrage strategy like this isn't very easy to execute. Most viral sites rely on organic shares primarily for traffic, with maybe a little bit of paid traffic to back it up.
Also, depending on your market, Adsense may not give you great payouts. Unfortunately, there's really no set-and-forget network that's better than Adsense: you'd be better to run your own offers on the site and optimise them as you would on any other traffic source.
However, job #1 will be to get your viral sharing going. How much non-paid traffic is the site getting at the moment?
Yes for this kind of thing you need virility.
Arbitrage is simply not going to work.
Were your posts going viral, or were most of your clicks coming from paid ads? If so, you need to work on that issue first.
Hi Zeno and Caurmen,
So I am currently advertising my posts on facebook and paying for 'website clicks' directly to my posts. I'm targeting countries
in South America, and FB's CPC is very cheap. Just 2 cents per click. Here is the FB campaign breakdown:
Website clicks: 833
Reach: 19,137
Frequency: 1.04
Total Spend: $20.02
Average Cost Per Visitor: 0.2 Cents
So far, my adsense earnings in the last 7 days has been low.
Estimated Earnings: 0.18 cents
Page views: 2,325
Clicks: 40
Page CTR: 1.72%
CPC: 0.9 cents
Page RPM: $1.62
My goal is that one of my paid posts on FB will be shared enough organically to go 'viral'. Which will
mean thousands of visitors to my viral site, more people click on the ads and I'll make big bank.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks I appreciate the help and insights.

I thought running traffic direct to Adsense pages was against Google's Guidelines?
Ah a topic I might be able to help on. I currently run arbitrage and google adsense is just not going to cut it. You need much higher banner traffic such as Pulse Point, Sonobi, Xertive and many other. You will also need to place widgets on your page such as taboola and adblade. .02 Clicks is great but thats 1/4 of the battle. Figuring out all of this takes time and a lot of building relationships. After that the hardest part is floating the money for the NET 30 NET 60 pay outs. Spend 10K a day and you are floating 300,000k AT LEAST before getting your investment / profit back. Oh and if the networks thing your doing anything at all shady like having to many banners on a page they can just decide they are not going to pay you.
As far as the people saying you need organic traffic to make it work they are wrong. I buy traffic from adblade, FB, Taboola every day and my organic traffic is very small amounts. I rely on getting clicks under .04 every day and as long as I do that I know I am making $
TO be honest as far as Affiliate goes its MUCH easier and less labor / technical intensive to get into. Also Weekly / Daily Pay outs are MUCH better then waiting 60 days for your money esp when there is a chance you may not get you money.
I would suggest signing up with other rev sources other than adsesne. I listed a few of the better ones that may or may not accept a newbie as they might not have enough traffic to their site. You really need a lot more monitization then adsense.
@jason a - very very interesting, thanks!
@yellowfever - Job #1 will be getting good at making viral content (unless you're planning to go Jason A's route, in which case follow his advice). For that, your cheap clicks are perfect - spend $2 or so per post, learn what works and what doesn't and concentrate on getting to the point where your traffic is at least 25 times what it is now. Once you've got that traffic coming in regularly, then you can start optimising your advertising with better layouts, more ads, more networks, and probably also split-testing affiliate campaigns on your own traffic.
You don't need ONE of your posts to go viral - you need to get to the point when you can write 10 posts and be reasonably sure one of them will go massively viral. At that point, you have a sustainable business at least in the short term if you can make revenue match up.
