Hi
I'm so keen to get a start and some momentum. My chosen niche is the over 50 year old male (like me) looking to earn extra retirement income by starting an online business - I have a website and facebook page under the name Senior Tycoon. I have a hosted shared server at Bluehost so I can set up landing pages and domains etc.
My plan is to focus on FB and mobile - I have some experience with FB ads but no clue about mobile so I'm starting with Caurmen's appetiser cookbook. All I've done so far is read up and apply for the F5 and Decisive.
Here's the starting point.
Facebook. I'm running newsfeed adverts like the one below

and today I'm experimenting with my first Clickbank affiliate link (which goes to my website and is then redirected) for a Social Security Guide. The current advert is below

I know that I'll have to sink money while I learn but I'm trying to keep costs under control with $5 - $10 a day budgets for each ad until I get smarter. Facebook seems good for my niche because of the demographic targeting.
While I learn about affiliate, Facebook and mobile I plan to build out the website to make it more interesting for visitors and Google.
Any advice or other opportunities I should be considering?
Thanks.
Your ads are really boring.
Slip into your customers shoes. What do they really want? Ask them questions like "Why are you throwing your money away? People like YOU throw away $500 of retirement MONTHLY. Go to this website and get your guide on how to get it". Also stay with newsfeed ads
Golden tip: Read CASHVERTISING
Agreed.
Your ads have one composite primary objective: Get their attention, then get them to click.
At the moment your ads offer no benefits, are boring and don't encourage clicking at all.
e.g. REPORT: See how a 63 year old grandad took his passion online - and made money!
Exclusive: Let me show you 3 steps to easily build passive income for retirement.
Hey man,
I'd check zeno's guide on facebook here on the forum.
Two things:
-- you generally make more than 1 ad. You create for example 10, often more, and then you split test them against each other
-- you do split test demographics right? One campaign each for male50-55, female50-55, male56-61, female56-61 - it's important to that from the start im, it doesn't cost anything and gets you free demographics data to optimize for
-- how is your landingpage conversionrate?
-- I'd make an excel sheet with all the important variables
Your ads are the least of your problems.
I have taken a quick look at your landing page http://www.seniortycoon.com/. Your landing page suggests to me that you have absolutely no understanding of your target market.
I don't mean to be harsh here, but you really need to get back to the basics.
The first rule of marketing is to know your audience.
For your audience: What problems do they have, what obstacles do they face, what aspirations do they have, what scares them? How do they talk (in their own words) about their fears, their hopes, and their dreams?
I am pretty sure the aspiration of most 60 years olds is NOT to become the next Internet dotcom Tycoon.
Many seniors are afraid of technology. Even the ones that use Internet, they certainly do not talk like--or will have any understanding of--the text on your landing page:
In many ways this is your most important step. Before you fall madly in love with your internet business idea, make sure that you have an interested audience who will be prepared to part with their money for your products and services.
Establish a sustainable model for your customers
This will vary depending on what your offer is but it will be some combination of paid and organic traffic supported by a professional email list.
Monetization - Turning a profit
There are only a few ways to earn income from your online business: Direct and affiliate sales, advertising, and subscription. Which will work best for you and your customers?"
Rfiling, this is a reaaally good market to target. The older people who want to start their own business is booming!
I've done some research on this target and these are some things I've found out, might be useful to you:
50+ people
- They adapt very easy to new technologies because they are used to i, first users of:
- Video recorder/DVD
- Computer
- Internet
- Micro-wave
- ...
- First generation to brake trough the glass ceiling for woman, and they are proud of this!
- First generation to live for more than 30 years after becoming 50, and they want to do something after retirement!
- Physically and mentally still in good health, but scared for negative change in these aspects
- You would say they have time? Forget it! they have lots of caring for other people (children, parents, grand children,…)
- Elderly woman are the decision makers for around 70% of all capital in the world
- Elderly woman Responsible for most financial choices of the family capital
- First generation of that age that feels that they still can make a difference in the world
- They are still enlarging their social network, they are socially very active
- They are heavily influenced by the opinions and experiences of peers, and this is important! They don't trust young people so much to advise them products
- They are not particularly interested in Facebook, but they have an account anyway. (to keep contact with grandchildren) So they can be reached there.
Really curious how this will go, there is lots of money to be made here.
Thanks Steve
I haven't been disciplined enough with my testing exactly as you have described. There is enough activity to encourage a more systematic approach by me - I really appreciate your advice
Richard
Thank you - its very good of you to take the time to visit the site and offer feedback.
The page was thrown together very quickly at the same time as the facebook page in order to have a presence. The point was to validate that a market exists and after a month I believe that it does. The name is tongue in cheek - the audience is people 50 and over (not really old seniors) who want to take their hobby or side business idea online with a blog or site. So its a lite version of IM/MMO.
Copy writing is obviously my weakness as shown clearly in this thread so I will be getting assistance with this aspect. My goal is to improve my email list growth and conversion without dilution of the audience target - the list so far is people (both men and women) in their early 50s and they are enthusiastic and passionate about taking action. The website format and content will change from here to answer the concerns and problems I am uncovering from them. My plan is to have a 1000+ list of IM motivated young seniors within the next 6 months and I think this will be unique and valuable.
The great thing about STM is the readiness of experienced forum members to help out new starters - thank you.
Wow thanks Dennis for the shot of confidence. My first month has been validating this specific market and like you, I think its valid and I think its suitable for a modified type of internet marketing if only because it has been underserved and doesn't respond well to aggressive promotion. Thank you for taking the time to write those facts - say hello if you'd like to be involved or hear more.
