Finally Getting My A** Started on Facebook

Hey everyone! So finally I am putting a follow along together. I have been on stm for a few months and always seem to be to busy with not taking 'enough' action. I have a break between jobs so I finally buckled down and started to put together one of my first facebook campaigns.

I wanted to start with facebook because of its huge volume and targeting. It also has a huge inventory of mobile which I eventually would want to start. I also have a healthy budget.

Here is what I have done so far:

- got accepted to a few networks, for this follow along i am using peerfly
- found a unique offer on peerfly which should be a very acceptable market on facebook
- signed up with Voluum for my tracking
- built a site with 40 pages geared towards moms on a hostnine (shared hosting). I know I should be on a VPS but I wanted to get some money flowing in before upgrading hosting
- AND OF COURSE READ THE BEST FB GUIDE ON THE NET....ZENO'S GUIDE TO FACEBOOK!!!

So I am not sure if I should reveal everything? Let me know if there are details I should keep to myself. But I feel the best way to get the best help is to go through everything.

Traffic = Facebook. I am using my personal account b/c I have pages setup for certain niches. I understand I risk losing that account but my understanding I would lose access to only advertising but would still have my personal page..can anyone confirm or deny this?

Also i thought since my offer is safe I shouldnt have problems. However I do have another account I created a couple years ago. I am thinking that I should move my pages from my personal account to my secondary account and then use secondary account for ads?

Offer = Since I have a site geared towards moms and parenting I found an offer that fits that demo. Its from peerfly and its an offer for fiverr.com. The really cool thing is I can deep link on this fiverr offer for better targeting etc. This gig on fiverr is a great gift for a kids birthday. It only costs the consumer a minimum of $5 as most of you know but my payout would be just over $15 for anyone that buys a gig.

So in terms of how much to budget to test should I still use 10 x $15 ($150) or since the cost to the consumer is much less and therefore easier to pull the trigger should it be closer to 10 x $5 ($50) ?

Setting up the campaigns on FB =

[US] fiver thru mom site - moms 21-29 (Clicks to Website)
[US] fiver thru mom site - moms 30-39 (Clicks to Website)
[US] fiver thru mom site - moms 40-49 (Clicks to site)

Each campaign had 3 advert sets each with a different image. Then each of those images were added as an 'Ad' and then duplicated for a total of 3 of the same 'Ad' or image in each Advert set. The ad copy is the same throughout its only the images that are different. So there are 9 ads for each campaign or a total of 27 ads.

Here is example of the ad copy which probably needs to be greatly improved. lol

Post Text = Make Their Birthday More Special With A Unique Gift For The Price Of A Card!
Link headline = A Unique Way To Say Happy Birthday!
Display link = PUT A SMILE ON A KIDS FACE...MOMS LOVE IT!
Description = A gift that is perfect for: - birthdays - holidays - and just because. It will have others saying, "why didn't I think of that?" See why so many parents have chosen this over a traditional and boring card.
Learn More

Each ad had the following audience. Only difference was the age group:

Potential Audience
1,280,000 people
Location:
- United States
Age:
- 21 - 29
Gender:
- female
Category:
- partner categories Children 1 (0 - 2 years), Children 2 (3 - 5 years) or Children 3 (6 - 10 years)
Moms:
- Corporate moms, Fit moms, Green moms, Big-city moms, Trendy moms, Stay-at-home moms or Soccer moms
Language:
- English (US)

To start I setup a landing page on my 'mom' site that was more an article with links to the fiverr gig destination page.

Setting up Voluum = I think I set it up correctly but I am a bit confused about setting up variable for tracking. To track all the different advert sets (9) I setup 9 different campaigns in Voluum. Here is one example:

Facebook - United States - [US] fiver thru mom site - moms 21-29 (Clicks to Website) - IMAGE1 (happy birthday)

In voluum I setup the lander to my a page on my mom site when submitting the ads for approval..

More to come...

You wont lose the fb account just that you wont be able to access the advertising panel.

Thanks guys!

Ok so last couple days of running havent been very good. When I started I felt like i had a grasp on things and was excited. Today I feel like I am totally lost and have really f*ed this up.

I spent just over $90 and zero conversions. I started off by sending clicks to an article on my mom website. After about a day I realized was only getting about 15 visitors to click thru to final destination page so I changed the lander in Voluum to direct link to the fiver gig. I figured this would help tell me if the offer was good and then I could always go back to a landing page.

So I created an iframe page on my website and directed traffic to the fiverr gig. Here is the code I used, I got this from Luke at peerfly and apparently it is ok to use? Any thoughts?

<html>
<head>
<title>Page Title</title>
<meta name="keywords" content="keyword 1, keyword 2" />
<meta name="description" content="Enter your page description" />
<style>
* {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
body {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
</style>
</head>

<body>
<iframe src="http://peerfly.com/your_affiliate_link" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0">
<p>Click <a href="http://peerfly.com/your_affiliate_link">here</a>! (Your browser does not support iframes)</p>
</iframe>
</body>
</html>

I noticed soon after that my ads in facebook went into 'pending status' and I assume its because I changed the destination page?

However soon they went back to approved and started running again.

After 4 days and checking stats. My peerfly account shows 58 unique and 73 raw visits but my Voluum shows 164 visits and nothing else. Of the 164 visits 105 went to my landing page first and it doesnt show any clicks so i assume i set it up incorrectly since there should be clicks from when a visitor clicked on my link to the final destination page on fiverr?

What also seems odd is i just checked facebook reporting and for the same time it shows I only had 115 clicks. I also noticed my cpc is .81 which seems high. This tell me that I maybe wasnt general enough in my targeting and need to increase my potential audience.

I ran most of the ads using 'news feed' and as a dark post. I am a bit confused about the number of clicks because it looks like those can include clicks to the fan page etc...clicks that I dont want to pay for. To avoid this do you only run 'right column ads'?

Feeling totally lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What am i forgetting to provide in terms of data/info that can help you help me? Thanks!

Just some random thoughts...

maybe i should increase audience size?

also since no conversions maybe my ad was to vague and people clicked on it because was interested but when found out what it was decided against it...maybe I should be very specific of what the product is in the ad so only those really interested will click through?

So I broadened my audience and when i thought that would lower my cpc's it has seemed to increase them???

Reading Zeno's guide to FB again....

You're running the Fiverr offer where they have to be new to Fiverr and when they order their first gig you make $10 right?

I'm just getting started on FB as well. I think maybe your LP isn't very good if they aren't clicking through? You're targeting women with children, are the gigs you're promoting focused around their kids? Are you giving them multiple options for gigs they might like? Using images that will generate good CTR? Split testing LPs?

TBH I think you should have started promoting something else like lead gen. Just because you not only have to get them to sign up to Fiverr you have to get them to buy a gig before you get paid. That being said I still think you could probably make it work but it will take more testing then a lead gen campaign. You should also maybe promote a gig that matches their 'interests' target them by that as well.

Thanks chayes! yeah when they order their first gig i get about $15. I was worried about the landing page so I removed that pretty quick in the process and just did direct linking. Unfortunately no difference from what have seen...still 0 conversions. Good idea on the lead gen....will look into that but i didnt think FB liked those much?

Woah there cowboy!

Firstly, you need to get your tracking setup sorted.

Sending ad clicks to a web page with an iFramed affiliate network link is putting you on the fast track to getting your ads retro'd and your account needlessly banned.

I cover tracking with Voluum in my FB guide.

Basically, you want your ads going to a Voluum link.

You want that link sending users to your landing page or the offer directly (you can split-test these and SHOULD).

You also want geo-redirection rules in their to prevent your Peerfly link pissing off Facebook, which it is likely to do.

As for your actual ad performance and data, here are a few points.

1. Know what you pay for. Again I cover this in my guide. If you were expecting to only pay for clicks, you are on the wrong platform. Changing to RHS ads is not the solution but rather something to split-test. Expect <95% of your 'clicks' that you pay for to be people going to your Voluum link.

2. Your CTA link on your lander should be hxxp://abcde.trackvoluum.com/click - anything else and Voluum will not track visitors correctly.

3. What is your angle here? How are you targeting? If you are just targeting Woman in the US who are 30-40, don't expect a high performing campaign. Click costs depend on the targeted audience, ad type, competition from other advertisers, and of course ad CTR.

What ad CTRs did you get?

How can you improve them?

What kind of targeting can you test to focus on a specific audience?

These are the things you should consider after sorting out your tracking - it should be the one part of your campaign that you understand clearly.

Targeting here is the Major issue along with other things zeno mentioned.
What are you targeting exactly with facebook? How are you filtering out the mothers who are interested in birthday gigs for the upcoming Birthdays of their kids?
If you are just targeting moms, then your ads will fail.

Running Newsfeed for all moms will eat away your budget and you won't even the hit the right audience who are looking for birthday gifts etc.

I would suggest running RHS ads, and asking those mothers who are interested in birthday gigs to click through.

Awesome stuff guys thanks so much!!

Zeno..thanks so much for the help with tracking, that really helped made it 'click' for me and pointed out some mistakes I made.

As far as CTR the highest was just over .8% with most being around the .4%

As far as my targeting audience that is very much what I need to work on. I was targeting US moms with kids from 2-12 but clearly that is not targeted enough. What is the best way to find the 'right audience'? What are some ways to research this?

Thanks again!

Can anyone confirm if this setup is correct for launching and tracking campaigns on Facebook?

Setting up the campaigns on FB:

CAMPAIGN = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS

AD SETS = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 18-24 FEMALE

ADS = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 18-24 FEMALE IMAGE 1
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 18-24 FEMALE IMAGE 2
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 18-24 FEMALE IMAGE 3

AD SETS = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE

ADS = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 1
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 2
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 3

Now for the tracking in Voluum:

Setup CAMPAIGN = Facebook - Global - fiver widgets

Setup OFFERS = Global - Peerfly - fiverr- passthrough
Global - Peerfly - fiverr- direct affiliate link

Setup TRAFFIC SOURCES = Facebook (add custom variables such as age, country, gender, demo, bid etc)

...go back to campaign (Facebook - Global - fiver widgets) and setup default path and 2 rules for countries and browser per instructions on zeno guide (http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...king-Campaigns).

My big question is about the CAMPAIGN URL. Here is what it gives me http://owndomain.com/a0e274b0-24d6-4...ID&c6=CREATIVE

So when i go back to Facebook power editor and I am creating a 3 Dark Post's for each AD SET do I just change the CAMPAIGN URL and add the following urls into the FB dark post..like this:

ADS = [US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 1 ---- http://owndomain.com/a0e274b0-24d6-4...5=BID&c6=IMAGE 1
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 2 ---- http://owndomain.com/a0e274b0-24d6-4...5=BID&c6=IMAGE 2
[US] FIVERR - WIDGETS - 25-35 FEMALE IMAGE 3 ---- http://owndomain.com/a0e274b0-24d6-4...5=BID&c6=IMAGE 3

so this way i dont have to create a NEW campaign in Voluum for each 'ADS'?

When I first set this up I had a campaign in Voluum for each Ad image...ugh..and now i am realizing that I think I did it the HARD WAY! Just want to confirm this. Thanks!

Use Audience Insights and spend more time thinking about what characterises your audience.

What do you target prospects do? Where do they hang out? What are they likely to like?

There is no magic here, you just need to do research and build awareness of what they are like. The targeting options come naturally as a result of research.

Regarding your campaign setup, I would split each ad into it's own ad set.

Give each ad/image it's own budget.

So, at the moment, just make 2 more ad sets and move image 2 and 3 into those.

For your advert setup, you need to make each unpublished link post point to the naked Voluum URL without any query string data.

I.e. use hxxp://owndomain.com/a0e274b0-24d6-43d2-a6b0-7a36e5a6f44c

Then in the optional URL tags box put 'c1=US&c2=F&c3=25-35&c4=DEMO&c5=BID&c6=IMAGE'

Change Image to image1, image2, image3, etc for the different ads.

And of course the other values as well.

So, the campaign URL gets used in all the ads and does not change. The optional URL tags/tokens box then provides the supplementary info, which is appended to your live ad URLs, and communicates info to Voluum.

Everything that zeno said.

Some additional comments:

Just to be sure: we're at 90$ spend with 0 conversions with a payout of 15$, correct?
And: the conversion occurs, when somebody clicks on your ad and goes to your landingpage, then clicks from your landingpage to fiverr, creates an account there and pays xx$ money, correct?

-- what's the cost to user? Is it a real life gig, so somebody comes to their house and performs a show or something for the kids or just an item manufactured and shipped?
-- I'm not an expert on family things, but 10 year brackets seem a bit wide, I use 2 years personally and most I know use 2-3
-- you do split test the "age of the kids" categories? That might be more important than the age of the mum
