Ok a friend of mine has a question and I gave him the best answer I can give him. He saw me doing AM and is intrigue by it. He asked me should he start off in POF like I did or jump straight into mobile.
I personally suggested he jump into POF just to get his feet wet. (And also to join STM) The amount of knowledge I gain in POF has been immense. From creating LP, to gathering data, to more importantly learning the mindset that money spent is for learning. It is a very friendly platform to learn from. I am not making gang busters but constantly get profits. I am also started doing the mobile (cookbook is fucking amazing) just to test it. etc He is completely new to this. He worked in a warehouse for the past 5 years etc. No knowledge in creating websites, photoshop, etc.
His main conflict is being that he is greener than green. And will be learning everything from scratch. He asked me which platform has the most potential. I told him Mobile has a steeper learning curve but has more potential (something that goes hand in hand right?) He asked me to post this question on his behalf. What would you suggest someone like him do? Thanks in advance.
I think, if he has no experience with Photoshop, creating ads, landers, ad copy, how HTML/CSS works, etc., he should not invest in STM and not start campaigns anywhere.
Rather he should spend several months using any number of the free resources available on the internet to build a solid foundation of general knowledge.
O Zeno, I went over that with him. He is using my Lynda account and is currently learning HTML, Photoshop and Muse
But yes I told him he needs to build that solid foundation first period.
His main question was to see where he should focus his learning. Maybe I gave him the wrong information but for example as I am getting into mobile I need to brush up on learning how to make great banners and knowing how to make responsive LPs has been a life saver. Basically once he learn the basic of html, Photoshop etc. I guess he just want to know where he should focus his learning :P
If he is as green as you say, he would need to learn, at least, the basics of everything Zeno mentioned above.
As to whether he should focus on learning HTML, Photoshop, writing copy, or creating ads, it's kind of hard to tell because it would depend on what he's naturally interested in. It would be great if he could master everything but it's not possible or practical.
Whatever he chooses to focus on, wherever his natural interest lay (whether it's in the technical or creative aspect of the business) will be an advantage because he can build his business model around that. He can easily get a partner or outsource the tasks he doesn't like or he's not good at. But the important thing is that he understands how the different aspects of his business (website, ads, copy, content, marketing, etc) work together. He needs to understand the basics to know the difference between a good landing page and a bad landing page. He needs to understand the basics to interpret his analytics.
Does he have the funds necessary to start in AM with a reasonable chance of success? That's one of the most important qualifiers.
If he can easily lay his hands on $xx,xxx that he doesn't mind losing, then I'd say grab an STM account right now and get started with mobile following along with the Appetiser. That's the fastest way to learn, but it'll involve spending cash to substitute for time.
If, on the other hand, he doesn't even have $500 he can afford to spend on AM, then I'd recommend getting a supplementary income stream going, learning as much for free as possible, and THEN cautiously starting on something like POF with the aid of an STM sub.
